severe muscle weakness post colonoscopy
Posted by shattucks

My dad, (84 years young) has recently gone thru a colonoscopy. That
was 17 days ago. Prior to that he was the picture of health.
Treadmill use, weight lifting etc. Now he can't even lift himself out
of a chair without assistance. He is extremely weak, having no
muscular strentgh. He has since gone thru a blood test to rule out
anything blood related and that came up clear. I am at a loss as to
what to do. His doctor has told me to call him on Monday to see if
there is any improvement. Is there anyone out there that might have a
clue as to what is going on here.
I would truly appreciate any insight.
Thank you,

The only thing I can think of is if there is a possibility that your
dad was in the very early stages of myasthenia gravis before the
procedure. It's not likely given the weight lifting, but possible.
They usually use a fast-acting hypnotic benzodiazepine called Versed
during most colonoscopies. Versed is contraindicated in patients with
myasthenia gravis, because it will worsen the condition.

It's a stretch, but worth mentioning to your doctor.
