Herb supplement Noni--All cure herb?
Posted by Rajesh Khanna

Hello All:

I am doing some research on herbs. I came across herb called Noni. I think
came from Polynesian Island.

What is it used for mostly?

What is the pharmacologic properties on this herb? Is it well researched
herb?

Can it be taken for long term? Any side effect on Kidney or Liver?

Is it a adaptogen or stimulant? What is category does it fall into?

Thanks.

I've seen it at the store and have heard the most outrageous claims
for it - that it cures everything including AIDS. I am a natural
skeptic so I doubt it does anything, and may actually be harmful as
there is no scientific research to prove otherwise. The U.S. FDA
refuses to regulate herbal products, only intervening when scientific
data shows the herb to cause harm, as in the case of Kava Kava which
the FDA (and other countries' regulatory agencies) issued a public
warning that it causes severe liver damage. I'm not saying Noni is
harmful, but may very well be discovered to be in the near future.

To get money from hopeful fools.

Yes and no: There are quite a few studies testing to see what
chemicals are in it. Of the "what can this alleviate or cure"
studies, there are NO human studies that back up the claims made
on the internet, and although some studies "showed promise" for
various disorders they have not been followed up by anyone, nor
duplicated. It's never been tested on humans, just rats.

It's in the category of a fraud, as sold on the Internet. The
USA's regulatory agencies have hsut down proiducers and vendors
for fraud.

Actually, they are prohibited by law from doing it: a law pushed

However, the FTC can and does intervene for "mislabelling", an

It is not an adaptogen or a stimulant.

More or less an antioxidant I believe.

There are very little scientific studies done on Noni. Almost all studies
are still "ongoing."

I do know many people who have benefited from taking Noni.

Just try it for 30-90 days and see if you can benefit. I have heard of no
long term side effects.

What are you wanting to benefit from?

How would you categorize Maharishi Amrit Kalash and the claims made about
it?

http://tinyurl.com/28a2q

From http://www.mapi.com:

Amrit for Life

"Nectar of Immortality" "Golden Cup of Longevity" "Super anti-oxidant" These
are only some of the encomiums lavished on Maharishi Ayurveda's herbal food
supplement, Amrit. Not surprising, when so many people have so many good
things to say about it.
WHAT THE ANCIENT TEXTS SAY
The oldest existing Indian medical text, Charak Samhita, lavishes high
praise on the traditional formulation, listing the following qualities:
It enhances longevity
It boosts memory
It sharpens the intellect
It lends glow and aura to the skin
It improves quality of voice
It makes speech more effective
It increases the stamina of the senses
It keeps the body and the mind youthful.
WHAT THE VAIDYA SAYS
Amrit promotes "bala" or vital strength that helps the body fight back
disease.
It nourishes the seven tissues -- nutritional fluid, blood, muscle, fat,
bone, bone marrow and reproductive fluid.
Amrit balances the three ayurvedic principles of Vata, Pitta and Kapha,
which govern vital activities of the mind and body, right from circulation
and digestion to respiration and emotions.
Amrit boosts all three mental abilities recognized in Ayurveda: dhi --
learning, dhriti -- retention and smriti -- recall.
WHAT RESEARCH SAYS
The research on Amrit is now substantial. But initially, when Maharishi
Ayurveda introduced Amrit to the world, this free-radical-fighting,
health-enhancing food supplement seemed to defy all scientific logic. Modern
medicine was too used to the "magic bullet" approach: wait for a symptom,
and find a single drug to fire at it. The idea that an herbal food
supplement could produce such profound and wide-ranging effects seemed hard
to digest.
Then Hari Sharma, M.D., professor emeritus and former director of cancer
prevention and natural products research at the Ohio State University
College of Medicine, decided to put Amrit to the test. His team set out to
compare Amrit with three individual anti-oxidants: Vitamin C, Vitamin E and
the well-researched drug probucol. Their findings were dramatic. Weight for
weight, the aqueous extracts of Amrit were several hundred times more potent
than Vitamins Cand E and probucol. The alcoholic extracts were even
stronger: at least 1,000 times more potent.
The antioxidant properties of Amrit inhibit degenerative processes,
including abnormal platelet aggregation (clotting, leading to cardiovascular
disease) and the aging process.
More research findings:
Amrit helps keep arteries clear by decreasing free radical damage to LDL
cholesterol, thus helping to maintain the health and proper functioning of
the heart and the entire cardiovascular system. Amrit significantly reduces
free radical damage in the brain, thus combating toxic stress and nourishing
the mind's natural capabilities. Amrit increases the response of lymphocyte
immune cells by 300% to 400%. It also improves the functioning of macrophage
immune cells, strengthening the body's immune response. In one study, Amrit
was shown to reduce organ damage caused by toluene, a harmful chemical.
Among chemotherapy patients, research indicates that Amrit helps contain
anorexia and vomiting.

It's a lot of hyperbole totally unsupported by human studies done

Charak Samhita ... supposedly written by Acharya Charak (600
BCE). If you want to believe him, go ahead. But after all these
years how can you be sure of the plant ID?

What was he REALLY talking about?

Obviously skipping the brain tissue.

And can you actually produce this research? Where was it
published?

How do you know?

Shrug. Some guys that have made a lifetime study of ayurveda apparently
think they know what they're talking about.
