gaining back lost weight
Posted by Peter

I have a slight problem. I am a 5'10" male and used to weigh 167lbs,
but now I weigh only 115lbs. Obviously I lost a significant amount of
weight and am attempting to regain it, but I need advice as to how to
do it. I'm working out every other day and am on a high protein diet.
I basically warm up for 10 minutes on the treadmill and go through the
Nautilus circuit of eight machines, which work the major arm and leg
muscles. I've been increasing the weights each day I go, with which I
have no problem, but I don't seem to be gaining weight (at least
that's what the scales tell me). Is there anything else I need to do?
Also, does anyone have any recommendations? Thanks for the help.

First, get a checkup to make sure you don't have a physical problem...unless
the weight loss was intentional.

Eating more calories than I burn puts weight on me.........fast.

How old are you?

My inexpert opinion is that your caloric intake isn't enough
to maintain your present weight. I've known ppl who run/work out/etc.
and they say they _cannot_ do as much on a high protein diet
as on one with more carbs. Carbohydrates are the _fuel_ part
of the diet. Ppl who run long distance eat lots of them.
Add a bit more of "good carbs" to you diet, and see what happens.

Is anything else going on? You feel OK, right? Did the weight
loss start with your workouts? That's a lot of weight. Have
you seen a doctor?

The weight loss occurred basically over two years. I lost quite a bit
one summer during an archaeological dig (due to not eating much and
lots of physical labor), then during the following year I lost most of
it in the period of a couple months. I started exercising to get in
shape, but in the meantime I didn't eat much, so I ended up losing a
lot of weight. As a result, I felt extremely weak, and consequently I
ended my exercise routines. Recently, I started to eat more, and I
began a work out program. Since then, I've felt much better and have
had much more energy, so perhaps, this is the beginning stages of my
recovery.
