- dietary question
- Posted by -D-
I'm new to this newsgroup and have a question about weight loss. I'm 38
year old male and very active in working out...normally an hour or more 5 to
6 times a week (lifting weights, life cycle, swimming, elliptical). I'm not
really gaining weight, but I haven't lost any for awhile and would like to
drop about 15 or 20 pounds. I honestly don't have a lot of knowledge about
nutrition. If I was to guess, I'm probably eating too many carbs and not
enough protein. I'm looking for help or information on ways to improve my
diet where I don't get carb cravings. How to up my protein intake? I'm
sure by correcting my diet I would probably drop the extra 15 or 20 I'd
like take off. I've struggled with losing these last 20 pounds for awhile
with no success. Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Cut down on processed foods, ie. foods in a box or package that are quick
and easy to prepare. They are full of empty calories and high in
carbohydrates. Eat whole foods, meats and vegetables and cut down on
sugars. Keep up the exercise.
Don't look at weight alone as a determining factor of whether you are
overweight or not. Muscle weighs more than fat so look at your shape and
tone rather than the number on the scale.
Some weight problems are caused by internal health problems while most are
caused by external problems, like overeating, eating junk, and drinking
sodas.
Atkins has it right. The science proves it. But people who take his
approach to the extreme are just as bad as those who follow the couch potato
diet.
The posts trashing Atkins in this group are full of misinformation, using
emotion and fear to bolster their misinformed arguments. If you want some
science backed info about carbohydrate intake and weight gain send me an
email and I'll gladly share it with you.

Doug,
Thanks for replying to my post and offering the information. I
appreciate it. Is there a good online resource that will help guide me on
whole foods to eat? I hate to say, but I'm really not knowledgeable at all
about what constitutes whole foods or the proper foods to look for? Perhaps
something that would be a good starting out guide of things to eat, meal
plans? Anything of the sort?
Thanks again for your help!
