Cholesterol at 250 Question anybody?
Posted by rk

I usually watch what I eat. It seems like its very sad after I watch what I
eat my cholesterol goes up. I am 47. Is it dangerous to keep trying to lower
naturally. Whenever I gain weight my body seems to make more cholesterol. I
jog and my Doctor just gave me a prescription for cholestrol lowering drug.
Should I try lowering it naturally one time more first. I was eating allot
of chicken and turkey , Perhaps if I get rid of that and lose weight things
will get lower. Please appreciate any comments .

You run and watch what you eat and you still gain weight?

Something isn't right there.

Your cholestrol will go up if you gain weight.

Take the prescription unless you can truely eat right and lose the weight.

High cholesterol often is hereditary and in that case, no amount of trying
to lower it naturally is likely to work. I once worked with a woman who was
a vegetarian and ran marathons and her cholesterol, if she didn't take
medication, was in the 300 neighborhood. I was on statin drugs (zocor,
pravachol, lipitor, etc.) for 10 years to lower my cholesterol and it was in
check. Then I had an elevated liver count and my doctor said to go off of
it, lower my weight, exercise and watch what I ate. I did all of that,
including losing 40 lbs and walking 2 miles every day, and six months later
my cholesterol went from 210 to 250. Now, since I don't want to be on statin
drugs any longer, I'm trying Niaaspan (a time- released high dosage of
Niacin) and Zetia and eating on the South Beach diet. In my case, it is
hereditary.

If I were you, I'd listen to my doctor. High cholesterol, unchecked, will
significantly increase your chances dying prematurely.

My cholesterol dropped 38 points in just 6 weeks by switching thyroid
medications. The other thyroid medications pnly dropped it 6 points. For
those that are hypothyroid, thyroid meds can make a difference in the
cholesterol levels. Why be on more than 1 medication, if one can do the job.

Marty , It maybe hereditary but at age 48 how dangerous is it to wait a few
more months ? No one else in my family had it. My cholesterol was 210 for up
to now , I was eating allot of chicken or turkey. Now that I haven't there
can't be too much danger waiting a few more months. I heard there was an
article about the dangers of Lipitor in Money magazine so I feel compelled
to wait for two more months. I just wanted to get a feel what people were
thinking out there. Of course I don't want to die too soon.
I heard good results about pritkin diet. I am close to that. As for the
woman who had cholesterol at 300 and did marathons what happened to her?

I wouldn't think it's dangerous to wait a few months, but I'm not your
doctor and I don't know your medical particulars. I was referrring to my
case, everyone's different. The woman I know whose chol was 300 wound up on
a statin drug, forgot which one. As far as waiting to lose 10 or 20 lbs,
again everyone is different. I lost 40 lbs, was eating what I thought was
right and walking 2 miles almost every day and mine went up, not down, after
I went off of Lipitor. I found out that a lot of the things I was eating
were not good for me - for example, you'd think that watermelon and bananas
were good for you - guess again. If you want a good diet to try, check out
the South beach diet and adhere to the foods recommended there. You'll learn
a lot about good carbs/bad carbs (that's where the no-no on bananas and
watermelon comes in). Personnally I've adopted SB as a way of life, not a
diet per se. And I'm taking a 500 mg dose of niacin (prescription Niaspan)
daily and walking the 2 miles a day. I'll go back to my cardiologist (who
recommended the SB diet, also written by a cardiologist) in May and see what
the numbers say. At that point I may be forced to go back on statin drugs or
be pleasantly surprised.

Good luck to you, just don't fool around with your health. You only have
one life.

Marty,
Is that the diet that talks about glycemic levels in foods? If so I do try
to watch that. Bananas won't have cholesterol but if it has a high glycemic
level it can drop your blood sugar and in effect play havoc with your
metabolic system. Potatoes are pretty high also. I have to do better there
for sure. Marty , let me know how you do, I didn't know all this. thanks

Yes, the South Beach diet does involve the glycemic index of foods, however
a better source for that info is the book "The New Glucose Revolution",
which goes a lot further into the glycemic index values of foods than the SB
diet. I've only been on the SB diet for 3 weeks, but I've lost about 7 lbs.
and my energy level has increased dramatically. I'm so sold on the diet that
I'm going to adopt it as part of a lifestyle change. But that's just my
choice, I would suggest that anyone else considering any diet make up their
own mind and choose what works for them.

Good luck
