- Tranny/Transfer case question for 86 4Runner
- Posted by Mark Simpson
I have three repair manuals, each has it's own merits. However each is a
little fuzzy when it gets down to the tranny.
I dropped the tranny to do a clutch job. Upon recommendation I am replacing
oil seals and a few gaskets along with the clutch kit.
I have removed the transfer case, 6-bolts and it slides right off. The next
section that has been referred to in my manuals as the "transfer adapter"
which is mounted against a thick section that looks like a divider between
the transfer adapter and the transmission case.
Neither manaul is very clear at this point. I have gaskets that match where
that thick divider would seperate from the transfer adapter. There are 9
bolts holding the adapter. Can these be safely removed and the transfer
adapter seperated from the transmission or am I getting in over my head..
lol I just don't won't to unbolt that thing, slide it off the tranny and
have pieces fall out with know idea what goes where.
Any input would be great!
Thanks, Mark

Mark, stop, you are basically tearing down the tranny. This is not a
problem as long as you have a factory manual. For a 1986, you should be
able to pick one of these up from Ebay.

I got manuals. Even the "shop" manual I got is fuzzy here. I simply want to
know if I can split the transfer adapter apart from the transmission case
and replace that gasket and seal? I don't want to do this if it involves
removing components othere than the bolts that attach the two cases.
I am not looking to rebuild the tranny. I am replacing the input shaft
bearing and seals. But that was the extent of any planned work.
