American 4wd trucks??
Posted on 01-30-2004 | 22 Comments

I know 3 people that have what should be good used American trucks. I own 2 Toyotas and a Lexus, and don't expect Toyota reliability from US trucks, BUT look at these 3. All one owner, v8, fwd. They were all serviced regularly and not abused or thrashed by owners. 97 Ford, 62000 miles, replace engine $3200 94 Chevy, 85000 miles, burns quart of oil every 2500 miles, smokes out exhaust. needs rebuilt already.

Cracked Head - 1985 22R
Posted on 01-30-2004 | 3 Comments

A local machine shop found my head to be cracked so I bought a remanufactured head from him for $325. , and I thought I was just going to get a valve job for $70. How convenient the shop had the re-mfg. head in stock. When I went to look at my cleaned up head, I was shown one with cracks. OK, but was it really my head? My Lesson: Mark your parts prior to taking them to a machine shop. steel stamp, vibro engrave, punch , electric drill or even a file to make a unique mark or 2.

Air Control Valve Leaking
Posted on 01-30-2004 | 4 Comments

The air control valve on my power steering pump is leaking like a sieve. I had it off while the pump was being cleaned and I suspect there is an o-ring or something that was supposed to go inside the port that it screws into. Sure enough, I looked at the shop manual and it shows something going in there, but I don't know what it is. It looks like a little cylinder with an o-ring around it in the picture. Any suggestions? It may be on my shop floor somewhere if I knew what I was looking for.

88 4Runner High and ERRATIC IDLE
Posted on 01-29-2004 | 5 Comments

My brain hurts from trying to solve this problem...PLEASE HELP ME. I am having two possibly related idle problems with my 88 V6 4Runner. 1st) It used to idle at 800 rpms which is perfect and then when winter hit it decided to start idling at 1500 rpm. If I let it idle for about 20 mins it will come down but as soon as I drive, it goes right back up. 2nd) when the brake pedal is depressed my idle hunts from 1000-1500 rpms. And for some reason when I engage the 4wd the idle hunting stops. If...

Ford - Have fun being # 3 !!!!
Posted on 01-29-2004 | 16 Comments

It's official...The biggest trashbuckets on the planet have slipped to # 3 in sales volume for 2003. Guess who's # 2? The world finally knows what we've known all along! Oh, and great marketing, too..."If you haven't looked at Ford lately, look again" Sounds like an admission of poorness for past production. That dumb stump jumper singing makes me cringe!

New owner of a 93 ex-cab
Posted on 01-29-2004 | 13 Comments

I just bought a 93 ex-cab 4x4. I have had and 83 and an 85 but this is my first toyota with IFS and EFI and I am not sure if there is anything i need to look out for on this vehicle. It runs great, Strong, good tranny, 4 wheel drive is solid. I am not worried about the truck, but i am just wondering if there are any "parts to watch" on this make/ model? Thanx, -- Matt C. When I read about the evils of drinking, I gave up reading.

New Oil Pump or Not
Posted on 01-28-2004 | 3 Comments

I'm pulling the head on my 22RE to do a valve job so I'm replacing the timing chain and gears with a DOA kit. My TG cover isn't scored so I'm not going to replace that but since I've got the cover off and have easy access to the oil pump I'm thinking it might be a good time to replace it. The oil pump has been working faithfully all along but the truck's got 149,000 miles and I'm wondering what the life expectancy is for a stock oil pump. Is an oil pump something that should need replacing...

What i would like to know is are there any web sites selling used parts for our trucks? Thanks! -- Matt C.

Oversize Oil Filter in 3VZE 4Runner
Posted on 01-28-2004 | 2 Comments

I was wondering if there is anything to gain (or any risk) if I were to replace the existing oil filter on my 3VZE '91 4Runner with a larger capacity oil filter. The stock model sure is tiny. For example, the aftermarket 3614 (FRAM and AC Delco designation, respect) could be replaced by a 3600. It is about an inch longer, but all other dimensions (threads) and values (e.g., bypass valve pressure) are identical. For example, I could use the Purolator Pure One in the larger size and be less...

Update on Tacoma 2003 that fails to start intermittently
Posted on 01-28-2004 | 1 Comments

Gentlemen, I just received my vehicle back from the dealer. After inspection of the vehicle by a Toyota FTS, I was informed the he managed to duplicate the problem (wow!) and that he has seen the problem before (2nd wow!) . The problem was determined to be the fuel pump and fuel pump regulator. Both were replaced by the dealer. Based on the RO the part numbers for those are: 23220-0C010 and 23280-62030 respectively (for a V6 Prerunner). First, I must say that I am thrilled to finally have...

94 4runner starter
Posted on 01-27-2004 | 1 Comments

With this winter, I am having a hard time with the starter motor. I dropped a new battery in the engine with more cold cranking amps, and the engine turns perfectly. However the starter motor does not seem to be disengaging even after the engine has been on for about 2-3 seconds. It makes a loud, electrical motor "wind-up" noise while the engine is started, and disengages way too late. Sounds like the pinion is sticking, but Im no authority on starters. Is there anything I can do about this,...

1996 Tacoma, oil leak?
Posted on 01-27-2004 | 1 Comments

I bought this 96 Tacoma about 6mths ago. It has about 72k miles on it, and was checked by my mechanic. About 3 weeks after I bought it, I changed the oil. I noticed a thick gook around the oil cap, and surrounding area. I cleaned this up, and changed the oil About 1 week after this, I checked the oil, and nothing was on the stick! I then added some more oil, and it seemed fine. I checked the oil again a couple of days later, and a little over low was shown. I decided to leave it the way...

4WD with only a pair of tire chains
Posted on 01-27-2004 | 9 Comments

Gentlemen: If one has a 4 wheel drive vehicle (Toyota 4Runner in my case) but only has one pair of tire chains, is it best to put it on the front tires or the rear tires? I would like to hear someone's thoughts and opinions on this. My intuition says to put them on the front tires for better steering performance but that might cause the vehicle to fish-tail a lot around

speaker replacement
Posted on 01-27-2004 | 3 Comments

i am interested in removing an original speaker from my 1992 4 x 2 toyota pickup truck ( the speaker is cracked ) and replacing it with another speaker. my question is: how do i get to the speaker? it looks like the speaker grill, glove box, etc. are all one piece. i had the 1 underneath screw and 1 underneath bolt out and the 3 phillips head glove box screws out, but did not want to proceed further w/o more knowledge. do i need to take the dash apart?

How's my mileage?
Posted on 01-26-2004 | 5 Comments

I've had my 5spd 96 4Runner (2.7litre 4cyl) for about four years and have kept up with the mileage (as well as doing regular oil and filter changes) on every gas stop since purchase back in late 1999. All but maybe 5 gas stops were not complete fills, so I'm pretty sure of the accuracy of the figures. Got bored today so I figured I'd catch up and entered a year's worth of figures into my computer to see how she's been averaging... I notice this last year the mileage has gone down a tad. Not...
