Thanks.

A simple search for Alaska DOT and a little scrolling to find license
plates produced this:

Why do some people resist putting on a front license plate? What is with
that? What difference does it make? To whom? Just curious. Thx.

Many vehicle designers only think of front plates after designing the front
of the vehicle. The placement of the plate is often not thought out taking
away from the look of the vehicle when the plate is attached. Plus, its left
to the owner on occasion to drill out the holes for a plate in the bumper.

So I guess the difference is a nice looking vehicle for the owner versus an
ugly plate stuck out like a sore thumb.

I left out of my previous post that it is not required if you are
visiting from another state. Only if you move there; the same as it is
in Texas.

(in article <486C6EF6.BD40EAC2@home.thx>):

Arizona only issues one plate, so I put it on the back, which is where it's
required to go. If they issued two plates I might put the other one on the
top, so that the next time I get involved in an OJ type of chase the
helicopters would be able to tell who I was.

You need one for New Mexico, to remind Americans the car is not a Mexican
one. Mexican car plates don't look like US plates -- and are quite readable
at a distance. I don't know what percentage of Americans even know Alaska is
a US state ... it is probably 25% to 33%.

They are dangerous. Most vehicles don't have a properly designed recess

a car-pedestrian accident.

Plates are only required on the back of vehicles so if being pursued by
police they can be spotted and relayed back to HQ.

From Alaska's DOT site- License Plate Information

Alaska law requires motor vehicles to display two license plates. A
month tab and a current year tab must be displayed on the back plate,
only. Motorcycles and trailers have one license plate with month and
year tabs. If you have a passenger vehicle, motorhome, truck or van
with only one plate, see Duplicate Plates for procedures to obtain the
correct plates.

Yes, you need a front plate in WA, but not necessarily the correct
one..........

One little variation... I have three cars licensed in WA requiring only a
rear plate, under the classification of "restored classic." They need not
be restored, but must be at least 30 years old, and are not supposed to be
daily drivers. You come up with your own plate, which must match the
birthyear of you car. Depending on the plate issue year, you may also need
to find the correct year tab. For instance, a 63 Buick with a WASH 63
plate, no tab. My 62 Dodge has a green '58 plate with a '62 tab. This, for
a one-time charge of about $75. License is good for life.

On a humorous note, when they decided we need to replace our plates every so
often (under the guise of: "They wear out and you can't read them" - the
truth: yet another shameless way to collect revenue.... Total and utter
BS), my '63 Wildcat had it's original plates, in pristine condition. When I
was forced to install new plates, I only installed one on the back. I drove
it for years with the new plate on the back and the original plate on the
front. Kept the other new plate under the seat, JIC I ever got stopped...
didn't. That's how much attention they pay to the front plate.

I think they have replaced ours recently because the retro-reflective
paint technology has improved over time. They need us to have nice shiny
front plates for their laser speed guns to work properly.
