01 Tacoma drivetrain noise

I have an 01 Tacoma 4x4 extended cab V6 with a noise problem as I let off
the gas (coast) at highway speeds. As soon as I put my foot on the gas
though it goes quiet. I'm usually pretty good at diagnosing car problems,
but have absolutely no idea what could cause this. Anyone have any
experience with this?

Yet another noisey Toyota that the Dealers probably wont be able to diagnose
and repair! Good luck, this one sounds like my dillema post below on Toyota
Prerunner
Problem Unresolved.....

You have a problem and now the dealers are all bad guys? Get a
grip...it is not a conspiracy to single you out.

To the orig. poster: put the rear axle up on stands and have someone
accelerate/coast while you listen to the differential to verify
whether the noise is possible ring and pinion noise.

I'm just frustrated.....All I want is the noise fixed.
I believe its called venting?

Sounds like a lose pinion bearing in the rear diff or bad ring/pinion
gear or not properly set up gearset.

What do you mean, he had such a good description of the noise, I told
him probably exactly what is is. Why don't you do the same?

A little advise, you get lots more flys with honey than you do vinegar.

Would Toyota disassemble the rear end to actually see if there are any
problems?

No, if it was me and it was infact in the differential, I'd get the gear
ratio and order a new 3rd member (new diff ass'y) and pop it in. Quick
turnaround time for the customer. Now an out of warranty fix, I'd
overhaul it, UNLESS the ring/pinion was damaged, I'd order a new unit.
Ring and pinion plus bearings cost about as much or more than a new diff
ass'y.
