tranny problems?
Posted by David Freund

I have a 98 4cyl. camry with 79,000 miles. i moved to denver last winter
and as a result drive it in the mountains on a regualr basis. i took it in
to my old dealer back home while visiting (chicago) for the 75,000 mile
service. it's been serviced every 15K since i bought it new. they told me
that they found metal shavings in the transmission when they drained the
fluid and recommeded that i consider getting a new tranny because of
possible internal damage. the mechanic also told me that the valet noticed
a delay when shifting it from reverse to drive when he pulled it into the
garage. i didn't do anything to it, and have since driven from chicago to
denver with no problems. i don't notice any problems, other than it being a
little slower off a stop than it was a few years ago. honestly, i don't
know shit about cars...from what the mechanic found, do i have anything to
worry about? has anyone ever heard of a tranny going out on a camry at
79,000 miles?

Metal shavings are common in all transmissions. I would suggest getting a
complete fluid exchange if you have not done that and see if that helps. If
not, Lucas makes some trannie additives that have been well rated.
