The top 10 stolen cars in 2007 were
1) 1995 Honda Civic
2) 1991 Honda Accord
3) 1989 Toyota Camry (yes, 1 9 8 9 )
4) 1997 Ford F-150
5) 1994 Chevrolet C/K 1500 pickup
6) 1994 Acura Integra
7) 2004 Dodge Ram pickup
8) 1994 Nissan Sentra
9) 1998 Tonyota pickup
10) 2007 Toyota Corolla

In the top 10, the Camry is the only car from the Decade of
the Eighties. Actually from the Eighties! Almost all the others are
from the '90's.
But even a 19-year-old Camry from the Eighties is still valued
highly and wanted {chuckle} . I guess that attests to the overall
quality of the vehicle.
I think most stolen cars are taken because there is high public
demand for their parts, so the thieves can easily sell those cars
to shady middlemen and for a respectable amount. That's what I
heard on an old TV news report, anyway.
That's why you don't ever see many expensive luxury cars in
the Top 10 Stolen lists (like Lexus, Mercedes, Jaguar) because
there isn't high public demand for them.
Why the 2004 Ram and 2007 Corolla are in the top 10, I'm not
sure. But if anyone has any ideas...
Maybe those two are joy-ride targets?? Or maybe the '07 Corolla
is wanted by a different kind of thief, one who plans on keeping
the car for his own personal use over a decade?

some cars have immobilizers so the thief would have load up the car to
take it away, at least in a case where the immobilizer worked..

I'd like to see this expressed as a rate based on the number of each
model on the road. It might flip things around a bit.

I believe those are put into cargo containers and shipped overseas. The
cars are then sold there. It's an entirely different sort of operation.
Not to mention the top ten list is raw numbers not percentage of those
built. Because of this more common vehicles will always push the less
common ones down the list even if the same percentage of them are stolen
each year.

It would flip things around a LOT. None of the cars on that list are
stolen because they're particularly desirable, they're stolen because
they're plentiful- meaning they're available to steal AND there's a big
market for their parts.
