Synthetic Oil - 5W or 10W?
Posted on 08-08-2004 | 5 Comments

Sorry for the bad links I hope this will help all the forum members on synthetic oil life. But i would add my two cents Change synthetic oil every 8000 miles or six months which ever is earlier with a good oil filter. I do not recommend using one year or >10000 mile synthetic oils especialy for toyota engines. For the fact any toyota engine from 1988-1998 will burn some amount of oil. Every one claims they have the best synthetic oil, yes yes yes in the labs.

LE Rear window problems
Posted on 08-07-2004 | 4 Comments

It turns out I didn't have to remove it either. Actually, I got the regulator out without even removing the window. And now I have a $60 replacement off the internet; most of the shops I went to could order the front regulators, but not the rear. We'll see how it holds up. You need to find a local online source that lists cars for sale where you can also check recent sales to determine actual prices received. In California we have "Recycler". See if you can find something similar in your area so you have enough data to make a clear determination. Newspaper ads alone aren't enough. Here's a list of fifty four 1999 Toyota Camrys available within one hundred miles of my zip code:

97 Camry - from where?
Posted on 08-07-2004 | 2 Comments

I ran a check on the numbers when I bought it and this car has never been in an accident (I'm in BC, Canada and the Gov't documents these things). Also I had a good look inside the hood, under the fenders, under the carpets, everywhere, and the whole thing is factory put together. It's a good point though HachiRoku - I'll be rechecking this thoroughly now.

88 Camry bizarre transmission problem
Posted on 08-06-2004 | 2 Comments

Gary: I have the same exact car, with the same exact problem. It was just given to me by my parents in FL a few weeks ago & they told me there was "something very strange going on with the transmission" Since it was free & in great shape otherwise, I drove it here to NJ. The problem was getting worse so I took it to the Toyota dealer here & they said it was a "spindle" problem & the trans needed to be replaced (for a small $3000 fee!) I don't trust them at all & when I called other transmission...

I know what I'm doing.") But if you're going to drive at high speed, do check your tires frequently for wear and air pressure, and age-related weaknesses. I had a blowout once at 65, with a uhaul trailer behind me, and almost lost the car and myself, and I don't wish that experience on anybody!

Probably the coil, If it is damp out. Is your distributor cap tight. To see if it is moisture get it running to temp, turn it off, wait apx 45 min to 1 hr . If it runs fine it is moisture in the distributor and possibly on the coil. A new coil may be needed

Bad V.C.G. would lead to a false air entry or unmeasured air entry into the intake system. Following are excerpts from different Toyota technical articles "There are several tests which can detect false air entry into the induction system. A good visual inspection of the intake air connector pipe and connection points as well as inspection of all vacuum hoses, engine oil filler cap, and dip stick seals are a must." "The ECU calculates basic injection duration based upon speed and air flow

99' Camry WaterPump/Belt

I paid $450 total for both belt and waterpump. But they didn't replace tensioner bearings, and now mine are starting to go... so make sure they do that while they're in there. Otherwise it will cost another $450! Also any seals that are nearby are worth changing, since those are also cheap. 95 Camry Radiator Rot
Posted on 08-05-2004 | 3 Comments

I am afraid my antifreez change interval record is not a good one. I use Prestone and have changed it once in 120k miles. However, I did not see any evidence of a leak starting before the fins dissolved. In fact, I would have guessed that this was an outside-in phenomena. The fact that only the bottom half of the radiator rotted makes me wonder whether catalytic converter heat (or leak?) may have played a role in its demise. I was going to take a picture and send it to Toyota for their comment,...

Same sort of deal happened to my car a while back. Turned out the battery had completely lost its charge. Check and make sure your alternator is working which can be easily done at home with a voltmeter. If you get a voltage of about 12-16 volts you should be good. Other than that check connections and fuses. Hope that helps Keith G
