AutoZone prices tend to be lower than other chains. But you're right, some of the stuff they carry are just what you pay for. But they've gotten better now. As far as some of the name brand stuff, like Bilstein, Permatex, FelPro, Denso, AutoZone offers a good deal. The Bilstein you get there is just as good as the one from the factory ;) m Ransley wrote:

'99 camry coolant flush clarification

I found this site: http://www.arrowheadradiator.com You may be interested in the article on "flushing" the rad: http://www.arrowheadradiator.com/flushing_your_radiator_and_cooling_system.htm The "Radiator Failures" tab has pictures of solder bloom. Or if you see white deposits on the inside of the plastic tank then there is steam damage and the plastic tank may be going, etc.

Camry glass break detector
Posted on 03-29-2006 | 8 Comments

No, the glass break detector, called GBS, "listens" to sounds of certain frequencies -- ones that most resemble glass breakage. Motion sensor used to be mercury loaded, but now probably just spring loaded. If the car shakes past a threshold then the alarm goes off (like in a parking structure). WoodBee's gadget may be a GBS, but it doesn't look like the one from Fujitsu-Ten. Also, the Fujitsu-Ten OEM one has a part number like 08585-xxxxx.

95 power steering stiff
Posted on 03-28-2006 | 1 Comments

Tightening the belt is a good idea - but you need to get the right one! That "first big belt" runs the alternator and doesn't touch the power steering. You would need to remove the tire and wheel to access the power steering belt. Not quite sure I remember just how I tensioned that belt. I think it was loosening the adjustment bolt and then prying against it in the adjustment slot. Use the manual for specified tension - IIRC it was around 80 lbs. According to Toyota, belt tension is something...

do-it-yourself transmission fluid flush?
Posted on 03-27-2006 | 3 Comments

personally, I would not use auto-rx in the transmission. transmission fluid already has a high concentration of detergents just keep your existing fluid clean by draining more frequently - that way you have no worries about getting the auto-rx out after use

How to change brake pads on 1998 Camry
Posted on 03-27-2006 | 1 Comments

You'll save yourself a WHOLE lot of time by leaving the pad anchor connected to the steering knuckle and instead removing the two 14mm caliper slide pin bolts to remove the caliper only. No messing with string or rubber bands, the pads just pop out and in against the rotor.

Japanese imports usually us a gasket that wraps around the thermostat plate. And the housing compresses the gasket for a seal. The traditional o-ring for the thermostat housing (other outlet(s)) is just an o-ring between the block or a pipe leading to the lower rad hose.

'02camry e-brake adjustment??
Posted on 03-27-2006 | 1 Comments

The cable has to be shorten. Block front wheels and jack up rear just to the point that wheels are off ground. Tranny in natural. Set hand brake at full OFF. The cable adjustment is about half way down the cable under the middle of the car. Turn one rear wheel by hand and adjust cable till the wheel starts to drag. Stop, that's it.Good Luck.

mrdarrett@gmail.com wrote: Now that's my personal opinion, becuase there is little data to go on. The Ultra is a new design that received the 2003 Popular Mechanics Editor's Award with its automatic adjusting inertia-sensing valves. Monroes are like the Fram of oil filters, designed to the minimum cost but are around every street corner. So go figure. I wouldn't mind using the Monroe Reflex, rolled out in 1999, like Nissan does in 2000+ Altima and many other cars/trucks..
