Considering '93 Camry Auto. Trans. 120K Maintenance
Posted by cauchy128@yahoo.com

My Toyota dealer tells me the auto. trans. fluid on my '93 Camry 4
cyl. is black and should be replaced.

Not sure but it may have never been replaced. Maybe one time max.

Think he wanted $100-200 or so for replacement, etc.

Should I go ahead and do this, even though the trans. works fine?

Should I ignore the principle of "If it works, don't fix it" and do
the work in the name of good maintenance? I don't want to damage or
impair the transmission by not maintaining it.

I drive 2500 so. Calif. freeway miles/year, and plan to do so for
years to come, as I am an old fogey.

Am thinking of AAMCO doing it. They have a coupon for $80 for drain
and fill.

*****Aren't you supposed to re-adjust the transmission when going from
120K miles fluid to new fluid?*****

If that's all there is, I could probably do it.

Also, I'm concerned that in the middle of the work, they'll want to
replace something for, say, $600-800+,.

Are '93 Camry auto, trans. prone to expensive repairs as early as 120K
miles?

Kelley Blue Book on the car is $2875.

I am aware that anything is possible, just wanted info for an on-the-
spot decision on an expensive repair on a transmission that works
fine.

Will be grateful for any advice, suggestions, etc. Tnx. No guarantees
expected, of course.

Have you taken a minute and checked the dipstick of the transmission
yourself? If it's brown (not reddish) and if it smells burnt, yes, you
probably would benefit from a change of fluid, BUT NOT a flushing of the
transmission. Just a change (which will get part of the old stuff out) and
after a thousand miles or so, another change, and yet a third change, and by
then the transmission should be fully replenished with clean fluid.
But under no circumstances would I get it flushed.
I don't know anything about AAMCO, but something tells me that they like to
sell, sell, sell...the more the better (for them). Toyota dealers are not
always the most trustworthy folks on earth either, but I'd be more trusting
of them than of AAMCO.

Does the '93 Camry 4 cyl. auto. transmission have a drain plug?

Yes, and the drain and refill is pretty easy to do yourself. If you've
ever changed oil you can do this. You refill through the dipstick tube.
It takes Dexron II, which has been superseded by Dexron III.

But it only gets about 1/3 of the old fluid out, as the rest is in the
torque converter. This is why it is recommended that you do 3
drain/refills over the course of a few thousand miles.

I have had 2 corollas, one celica, and a Camry. First corolla had
220+k on it, the second had 190+k the celica had over 200+k and the
Camry has 180+k and I never had any problem with the tranny.

Did you ever read your manual, do so and follow it.

Three drains/refills like others said should work very well. In fact,
Honda specifies this as the way to flush out Dexron ATF used in
emergencies. No power flushes!!

Better yet, have the pan dropped and wiped clean. Use a new strainer
and gasket like the $15-20 Fram ATF kit.
