Prius - Why aren't you buying one?
Posted by Bill Thomas

Greetings,

Moving the car differs from accelerating the car. I only
meant it did not have enough acceleration for my wife and me.
The term "enough" has a subjective quality. For my wife and my
self, it did not have enough. If you have no problems with
its acceleration, then for you, it has enough.

I apologize for making such a absolute statement, and hence
nonsensical statement, about something that different
people can honestly view differently.

Sincerely,
Bill Thomas

You missed my point, apparently by a WIDE margin: Richard asked about
reliability problems with the Prius in cold weather. You mentioned the
Japanese, implying that the only way we'd be able to find out about the
Prius' cold weather performance would be to ask a Japanese Prius owner. I
replied by saying that there's an AMERICAN Prius owner who has driven TWO
different Prius models (a 2001 and a 2004) in SUBZERO weather (Minnesota,
to be precise) with no ill effects, posting a link to his website, where he
keeps a log of his experiences with the Prius.

If that doesn't say anything about how reliable the Prius is in cold
weather, I don't know what is.

<snip newbieish non-sequitur about Japanese posting on Usenet>

Fortunately, those of us who regularly read translated manga and
Japanese-paginated English-language magazines like Newtype USA and Shonen
Jump know the difference. :)

Of the two I'd rather have a Prius, simply because Camrys are so damned
common. They're a dime a dozen, so to speak. That's why I like driving my
rather unique-looking car, the Echo. The new Echoes look pretty much like
all the other small cars, though. Glad I got an early model.

In my "fleet" I've got two motorcycles that likely make your car look
like a stone from 0-100 mph. At the other end of the spectrum, I"ve
got a diesel powered Datsun truck (no turbo). It has all the
acceleration of a 36 hp VW Beetle. IN the middle, a 2003 Corolla
with only 132 hp. Plenty of zip for the mountains of California and
short freeway onramps.

Heck, our '97 Camry 4 cyl. with 118k miles has more than enough power to get
onto a freeway ramp at speed, and cruises at 80 with no problem. I don't
do jackrabbit starts ...which my account for the fact that the tires didn't
need replacement until 90k miles. If and when I get a new Camry, it will
also be a four. Perhaps in steeply mountainous country one would need a
six, but I see no need for it in fairly level country.

No, I said he couldn't *understand* the Japanese Prius owner. We speak left
to right. They speak right to left. That's why Japanese is so hard to
understand.

Did you know that if you play a Japanese CD backwards, it becomes English?

Yeah, but he drives in English. In Japan they drive in Japanese. And on the
other side of the street.

I read a Japanese magazine once. Didn't make a whit of sense. Except the
ads, which were all in English.

Greetings,

When you get down to subjective, i.e. personal opinions,
logic, facts, and other such stuff does not matter. When it
does not do what you would like it to do, it does not make
the cut. We probably compared the V4 performance to the last
car we had or some other car we had driven or to how scared
we were when trying to merge ahead of an 18 wheeler.

Sincerely,
Bill Thomas

For those who whine about insufficient power from a high revving

Ok. I know what your thinking is about now.

What I suggest you do is start planning your passing and merging
BETTER because sooner or later, more horsepower is going to get you
into a situation that poor planning is responsible for. Try pulling
in BEHIND the 18 wheeler. You are a stupid man to squeeze in front
of a semi truck because then he is close behind you and his brakes
are no where near as effective as yours. You get SQUISHED. Trucker
walks away.

With mass-production, the costs would change radically. We'll see.
They seem to be a vastly better solution than pure electric, at least.

It's social engineering, of course. An economically viable business doesn't
