Kumho tires outperfom many big name tires for more than half the price
Posted by New Question

According to www.tirerack.com Kumho tires appears to have the best bang for
the buck. How is it that these tires are getting equal or better
performance ratings than BF, Goodyear, Michelin, and other big names for
more than half the price?

Another thing to consider - the application (all season, better rain or snow
performance, etc). TireRack is an excellent resource but I'm just curious -
what qualifications did they use to determine Kumho has the best bang for
the buck?

Something else to consider - I'm sure Kumho spends much less $$$ on
advertising than the big names!

if it's only a little more, and the tires are half the price of BF (e.g.), then
you are
essentially looking at tires that are half as good.

even if it's 50% more bang for the buck, the tires are about 75% as good as
BF (e.g.)

that's quite a drop - surely other factors besides price are important.

The other factors listed on www.tirerack.com include the following:

Dry Traction
Wet Traction
Hydro Resistance
Snow Traction
Cornering Stability
Steering Response
Ride Comfort
Noise Comfort
Tread Wear

All of the tire brands are measured accross the above variables. The buyers
are polled for the experiences.

I'm on my second set of Kumho Ecsta 712's on my '98 BMW M3 sedan. The
OEM Michelin Pilot MXX3's (now Pilot Sports) cost upwards of $250 each
- the Kumho's are about $110 each. I'm <much happier> with the Kumho's
than with the Pilots. I live 15 minutes from Firebird Raceway and have
tracked my M3 on all three of their courses in BMWCCA and PCA DE
events. You give up a <little> dry traction going from Pilots to the
Kumho's. What do you gain? Far better wear (e.g. 10K typical max for
the Pilots vs. 25K+ for the Kumho's), better curb protection, better
wet performance (as compared to MXX3's - Pilot Sports now boast the
same directional pattern that the Kumho's have), much lower road
noise, and better wear monitoring with Kumho's wear indicator system.
Same speed rating, same internal construction design as the Michelins.
