Consumer Reports November 2003 Tire Report

Does anyone have a copy of this magazine and could tell me what tires they
recommend?

My local library has people rip the pages out and leave the skeleton of the
magazine at the shelves. I went to the bookstore and it was sold out!

I can try another library, etc. but figured if someone had a copy, they
could send me the info to ac222@hotmail.com. If they have any attachments,
please email me to tell me BEFORE sending attachments to my hotmail address.
I will be happy to provide an alternate address for attachment delivery.

Regards,

Car Guy

"Quick Picks:
Performance all-season tires
Best for most; fine grip with comfort:
Falken Ziex ZE 512 (sport)
Bridgestone Turanza LS-H (touring)

If fuel mileage is a priority:
Michelin Energy MXV4 Plus (touring)

If winter driving isn't a factor, or you own a set of winter tires:
Bridgestone Potenza RE950

Ultra-high-performance tires
Best for most; a well rounded choice:
Goodyear Eagle F1 GSD3
Toyo Proxes T1-S

If ride comfort is critical:
Continental ContiSportContact 2"

Depends-- you looking for high performance all season or
max-performance (non-snow) tires? Most Lexi use the former, but the
IS300 usually comes from the factory with the latter.

It's OK for toasters, etc. But there are better reviewers for tires.

So point the OP in that direction, rather than condemning his original Q &
A--be helpful--rather than simply critical--

do it again. Just like some people are too lazy to use the google groups
archive search function.

But remember--everyone is NEW sometime--

It's really interesting to watch the development of a flame war. Just takes
a few insulting words, coming out of thin air.

I don't feel insulted, yet, just trying to get the guy to be helpful rather
than critical--as I tell my 12- and 13-year old students: Do not criticize
unless you are ready, willing, and able to do better right now!

But why be offended if I don't repeat myself?

Besides Consumer Reports DOES suck.

Your opinion is based on ___ years experience. Mine on 54. They, at least,
ALWAYS recommend Toyotas--I bought my first Corolla just off active duty w/
Army Reserve in '72, no regrets!

I have a lot more years experience than I wish I had. But I don't think
"years" is the only measure of credibility. For items that no one else tests
(like toasters), Consumer Reports does a fair job, except that they often
rate items on totally different criteria that I would.

For items where there are other specialty publications that do ratings for
things like computers, hi-fi equipment, tires, etc, I think Consumer Reports
stinks. And I mean they stink bad.

I do like the statistical data they capture for frequency of repair, but I
suspect that manufacturers have their employees compromise the system with
biased ballots (at least the smart ones do).

Some of the internet sites that sell tires have customer surveys that I find
much better than Consumer Reports when it comes to tires.

It depends upon your vehicle type and intended use. For cars, Michellin makes
the best overall normal tires(ie - not racing or high-speed). For trucks,
BF Goodrich is in the top 3. It's pretty hard to beat the all-terrain T/A
for reliability and decent off-road results.
