On a 1997 Tacoma, 2.4 engine, my speedometer cable broke, I ran liek that
for a few weeks. Check engine light came on, replaced cable , disconnected
battery cables, light went out for a few days now its back on. Is there some
way to reset the computer so the light stays off? I really doubt there is
another defect causing the light to come on. All performance is fine.

Check your oxygen sensor, it could be bad and wouldn't hurt the vehicles performance. Bad gasoline can cause that to happen as well.

I seem to remember that you jumper two certain terminals and the computer
resets the light, but I don't know what terminals.
