- camry license plate screws
- Posted by tom
I am trying to remove the rear license plate on a 1994 toyota camry.
After breaking one screw driver (a craftsman which Sears replaced)
trying to remove the screws I went out and bought some extra large
screwdrivers to get maximum torque but still no luck. Is there
something special I need to do in order to remove the screws. It
certainly doesn't look that way. I think the screws are just rusted
and stuck. Anyone have a similar problem and find a solution? I'm
thinking impact screwdriver next since I don't think a would be able
to get at the screws with any type of solution to break the rust.
What I really want to do is remove the plastic bumper cover. Do I
have to remove the license plate to do this?
Thanks for any advice you might have.

A drill. Some oil. And progressively larger bits. Make sure they're new and
sharp.
Yup.
Yup. A drill. It's the only way.
That will likely do nothing. License plates usually screw into thin, flimsy
bracketing, which will just bend under the impact.

No, the license plate screws are attached to speed-nuts that are
attached to the plastic cover on the bumper.
I had trouble with mine on a '93 Camry, and I actually tore a hole in
the plastic bumper material trying to get the screw out.
Now I remove the screw and coat it with White Lithium grease and
re-attachi ti once a year when I update my registration sticker.

lithium grease works for me, and once a year is not that onerous a
duty. I could easily be wrong, but I thought anit-sieze had more to do
with dissimilar metals and lots of heat. Steel spark plugs in an
aluminum head for example.
Has anyone used anti-sieze on license plate bolts successfully?

I live down the road from West Union and if there are 270 + you are counting
the dogs and chickens.
the lithium sounds like a great idea.
