Not looking to get flamed....

Have there been multiple issues of what last year was the "sludge"
issue with the 3.0L engines. Have mine rebulit 20K ago last April 02
and its starting to exhibit the same problems.

Thoughts appreciated in good faith

Better change your oil on time from now on. After one overhaul, you'd

bigger oil drain channels from the heads back to the pan

the oil was cooking and coking in the heads

The short of this story, reguardless of the BS that some were
expressing on this list in Apl 02 when the first rebuild, is that th
engine was rebuilt at 46,500 sludged up and pinging under load. First
oil changes were done at 7,500 mile each with Mobil 1. Figured our
newest car was worth the effort. My 88 Camry just turned 251,000 and
my 93 pickup 201,000 last week. Been a faithful Toyota guy for years,
couldn't complain!

Dealer bad mouthed me and the wife , calling us liars, nice dealership
huh?

Next thing car was done and engine all set....

Wife says that the oil change intervals were bogus at 7500 miles and
she wanted to do what the repair manager said and change it every
3000.

Droped the son off last week and realized that the knocking is coming
back and used the same "carbon build-up" test the dealer manager
showed me , foot on the brake and torque up the motor to load it...
shure enough its knocking again.

Expect it to be covered but this is rediculious. So here we go again,
didn't expect tohave to go thugh this again after the dealer service
manager says last time it was our fault and that its a "good business
decision" of Toyota and that if he had the chance he wouldn't cover it
last time.

Have to decide now what the story will be. My step sister in Michigan
had her Lexus motor in her SUV changed with the same issue last fall.
Hard to understand the sediment of others on this NG that say its just
bad maintanence.

No, it was the dirt in the oil that was cooking, but I thought it was
from being too cold? The holes where the oil runs out of the head is the
is a rectangle hole about 1.5" by about 2", so I dont think that was it
either. Its from not changing his oil. He'd better have servcie slips,
and all of these repairs MUST be OK'd by the DSM, its not a "done deal"
as Mike would lead you to beleive.

done it at 3000 miles, I'll put money its not sludge. Maybe you just
have ping from low octane or carbon deposits?

Is there any other way to clean carbon deposits other than a break down and clean ?

Some in this NG are still in denial, believing Toyota can do no
wrong. A bit of naiveté, but that's life. Toyota gave up on
blaming 'poor maintenance practices,' when engines serviced at
dealerships, within required maintenance standards, developed
what Toyota calls 'gelling.' Apparently buying Toyota's was good
for in the past. Giving up on a particular brand is simply
foolish because of one that you owned developed a problem, as
many in this NG are want to do.

That inappropriate maintenance is hard to understand is WHY you have
the problem again. Your service intervals are not appropriate for
your particular operating conditions. Duh. The only drivers able to
use the 7,500 interval are those who spend an hour per day at
interstate speeds in dry climates. All others, 5k miles or even a
less high humidity are the norm.

Yep, jap junk, but then Toyota couldn't do anythihng wrong, could they?
Hahahaha! They just won't admit that it was a design problem. Other car
makers engines have gone long intervals between oil changes without all the
"oil gelling" problems. If it wasn't a problem, why did they change the
engine oil drainback design?

Noyap: If you knew what the "design change" was, you would say the
modification is nothing.

They didnt idiot! Where did you get that info from, your arse?

That IS the strange part about Toyotas gelling problem, not all
of the engines develop the problem. Toyota says it was caused by
the head redesign, but why then do not all with that head have
the problem? We have only encountered one so far and we DO the
proper maintenance. As to why the problem is few and far
between, and involves vehicles properly maintained and some that
are not properly maintained, does seem odd. It might have
something to do with how and were the vehicle is used.

You must be one of those in this NG still in denial, believing
Toyota can do no wrong. He was not asking about a Ford, he was
concerned about his Avalon. As too how many developed the
gelling problem, you would have to get that information from
Toyota. Apparently there were enough to convince them to do
the right thing and offer to repair or replace engines for
seven years, for their customers with the problem. I doubt
Toyota or any other manufacture would warrant engines against
negligence.

Is there a removable plastic headlight cover made for the Avalon. I was
able to get the covers for my 4-runner but haven't seen any for the Avalon.
Toyota is promoting the clear bra and this is also supposed to protect the
headlights. Has anyone had any experience with this product? Thanks for any
information.
