AIR CONDITIONING FILTER
Posted by Jack

The Toyota 2001 Scheduled Maintenance Guide (for 2001 vehicles)
indicates that replacement of the air conditioning filter is necessary
at regular intervals for the Toyota Avalon. And ONLY the Avalon --
this procedure is not indicated as necessary AT ANY TIME for ANY OTHER
Toyota 2001 model.

However, my dealer is now saying I should replace the air conditioning
filter for my 2001 Celica GT as a routine maintenance procedure. (The
guide advises replacement at every 15,000 miles for the Avalon only.)

Does anyone have any information on this? Does the 2001 Celica GT
even HAVE an "air conditoning filter"? And, if so, is it even
POSSIBLE to replace it? And if it is, is it NECESSARY? Why would the
maintenance guide NOT indicate this as necessary at any time for any
model except the Avalon? Is that guide accurate?

IF your car has a "cabin filter" then replace it annually. Ask the
Parts Counterman if your particular vehicle is so equipped. If
you're in foul conditions often, replace it more often. My 2003
Corolla as this filter ... I'm about to replace it for the third time
at 33k miles. You would not believe how fouled up and impacted with
bugs and leaves and ash (recent southern Cal fires) this filter gets.
You can do it yourself with only your hands after your do it once and
learn a short cut. ;-)

I can imagine all the "flak" I am going to get.

I decided after looking at my 2nd cabin filter at 25000 miles in my
Highlander to try "cutting down" a furnace filter - I have installed it and
have yet to examine the results (about 2000 miles ago) I used a paper type
filter and carefully crimped the edges in the filter holder - the thickness
is similar. I'd think the efficiency of about 20% of a 2000sf house filter
would handle the volume of the highlander. Ah well if it doesn't work it
ain't much money!

LOOK in your Owners Manual. The location and replacement procedure
are outlined.

It isn't so much pinching pennies as it is looking at maybe a bit better
filter, more frequent changes and just trying it.

by the way, you must be using an after market filter if it is $16 - here at
the dealer they are $22 plus tax

I bought the filters from my Toyoa dealer where I bought my Corolla.
The first one was $22 and the second one $16. I need another one now
at 33k miles. They take "care" of their customers. :-)

Personally, I don't mind paying $16 for a quality part that's worth
something like $16; however, filters are cheap to make and I would bet these
filters cost Toyota about ten cents each. Consider how much materials and
workmanship goes into a $5.99 Toyota oil filter, and they are of course
selling them at a healthy profit; then consider how much less in materials
and workmanship is involved in making a simple interior air filter. Intake
air filters are much less expensive than interior air filters, and they have
to be larger and heavier-duty. I can see Toyota charging two or three
bucks for a ten-cent interior air filter because they have to make profit
and cover overhead. There's nothing wrong with that, but $16, or $27 as my
dealer charges, is a severe gouge. It's not about paying the money, it's
about getting ass-raped by Toyota because no one else sells those filters
yet.

First, you are only guessing at what Toyota pays for the filter.
Next, you have NO idea what handling costs are involved to get that
filter packaged, stored, shipped, stored again, transported,
inventoried in a Parts Dept, and finally sold to you in a dealership
that has a wealth of overhead. And these cabin filters are sold in
low numbers relative oil and engine air filters. So I see your
expectations as wishful thinking. The gouge you are wimpering
about is at YOUR DEALER .... who is not Toyota itself. BTW,
Purolator is making cabin filters for many cars but ... oddly, not
all Toyotas. Now there's a conspiracy theory for you to persue.
LOL

You may have a lot of knowledge about Toyotas, but you are still a snide
asshole.

Anyone know the procedure for changing the a/c filter in an '00 Avalon? It's
supposed to be behind the glove compartment- but I don't see how to get at
it...
