96 Tacoma - Intermittent Starts
Posted by Kurt Weber

My 96 Tacoma V6 starts or won't start intermittently.  Often, it seems to be worse when warm or hot, better when not driven or after sitting overnight.  I turn the key and I usually get just the solenoid click.  This might happen 3 or 4 times, and then turn over normally.  The good cranking speed when it does turn over tells me the battery and cables are OK, confirmed this with a voltmeter across the battery cable clamps showing no significant drop in voltage after it has pulled in the solenoid and while not cranking.  The only thing I haven't done is crawl under and look for voltage drop on the connection at the starter motor, but I'm doubtful that there is a problem there since it will usually start after a few no starts.  So while I'm still planning to check the starter cable connection, I'm suspecting the solenoid.  Can anyone advise whether or not the solenoid can be replaced on this starter, or am I stuck with replacing the entire starter?  Any other thoughts or suggestions are appreciated.

thanks,

Kurt:

Had the same prop with my 4 cylinder Camry.Pulled the electrical
connections off at the solenoid, cleaned the threaded posts, washers, and
electrical end connectors;then added a small dab of dielectric grease for
sparkplug wire ends and tightened everything well. Two years now and no
repeats.Give it a try,its easy and cheap.
