85 Corolla problem when damp

Corolla 1985 220K, carburetor, FWD, auto ...

I have to crank for about 20 seconds on damp mornings. Even after
starting, it stumbles and stalls at idle until warmed up. Also, about
5 times a year, it will start right up but stall after a few blocks,
and also have trouble restarting, even on a clear dry day. It seems
like pumping the gas pedal helps.

This problem has persisted through many changes of plugs, rotor,
distributer, and wires, air and gas filter. When I change the plugs,
it gets much better for about 5k, and then the problem slowly returns.
The plugs old don't appear fouled.

The distributor cap is ~ $40 and is called an IIG (integrated ignition).
Is there also a separate coil? It's not clear from the shop manual.

I'm having visions of something afoot your carb! If pumping helps... perhaps
it needs a good cleaning?

It's likely the carb in one way or another. The possiblity the choke may be
out of adjustment or the fast idle cam is stuck may be pretty good if
nothings been done to the carb recently. Check the site hole (on the
passsenger side of the carb body) and you should see the fuel level that's
in the float bowl. If the level is correct it'll show between the
'notches', anything other than that would mean your float needs
adjustment -- make sure you check the fuel level with the car on level
ground.

You may also have moisture building up in the distributor cap -- I use to
have a buick that had this problem and I'd occasionally spray some WD-40
inside the distributor cap every now and then.

The coil on your ignition is within the distributor.

There could be other issues but the above are my thoughts -- hope this
helps.
