September Hits & Misses
Posted by the Wicked Witch

Seems like it's time for this thread again!

Hits:

*Old Navy. I don't shop there much cause usually their stuff isn't my
style, but in the last few weeks found some nice yoga pants, a couple
button-up tops that fit great, and a hooded sweater that was insanely
cheap, all at ON. I'm especially jazzed about the button-up tops because
I have a hard time finding shirts in that style that fit well.

*J.Jill. Thanks to the J.Jill store, I am the proud owner of two pair of
the best-fitting, most perfect black pants ever!

*Chantecaille Rice & Geranium foaming cleanser. I have tried this
before, so maybe I shouldn't count it as a Sept. hit but I am going to
anyway. I bought this at the NM event, and I just adore it - it's the
lovliest, most luxurious cleanser I've ever used. The fragrance is
absolutely transcendent.

*Cartier le Baiser du Dragon. YMMV, but this is my kind o' perfume! I
think it's wonderful.

*Spanx fishnets. These are incredibly comfortable, and durable! I found
a couple pair on eBay (new in the package) for much less than they sell
for at Nordstrom, too.

*Marshalls, for shoes! I recently got both a pair of Liz Claiborne
maryjanes and a pair of Born clogs (both black, of course) for less than
I'd have paid for ONE pair at Macy's.

*Marshalls, for sweaters! 3 for less than the price of one, bought at
the same time as the shoes: a dressy, black cardigan that will be
perfect for wearing over nice dresses, with ribbon trim and ruffled
cuffs, Max Studio, orig $150, price $24.99. A red Max Studio v-neck
pullover with lacing on the sides and sleeves, orig. $150, $19.99. Red
BCBG scoopneck sweater with bell cuffs and lace-up neckline, orig $180,
$24.99. Marshalls really came through for me this month!

*Vaseline Healthy Hand Essentials lotion. Love this!! It really does
absorb fast and leaves no greasy-slippery gunk on my hands. The scent
isn't offensive, and doesn't linger. And it's CHEAP.

*MAC Fast Response eye cream. Really great for depuffing eyes in the
mornings!

Misses:

*Awake gel cleanser for combo skin. This is from the NM goodie bag. I
expected something much more luxurious from Awake, but this is a really
ordinary gel cleanser that lathers a bit and rinses pretty clean. I find
it really unremarkable and nothing I'd pay Awake prices for. But it
isn't irritating, and it works okay, so I'll probably finish the little
tube (I've got it in the shower).

*Chantecaille Flower Harmonizing Cream. Another one from the NM event. I
don't hate this stuff, but compared to the Water Flower Fluid and Vital
Essence, both of which I love, this cream is mediocre. It doesn't smell
as good to me as the other skin care products and it's pretty sticky.
Maybe it's just too rich for my skin.

*Macy's INC department. I used to like this brand for some trendy,
seasonal items, especially at the clearance prices. But lately, nothing
there fits right. I tried on a zillion pairs of INC pants looking for
black ones and came away totally empty-handed. Fortunately, J.Jill
worked out a lot better for me.

*My crummy XOXO wallet that is looking really sad. I got it at Ross and
it was really cheap. It's red fabric with red floral/scroll embroidery
on the outer flap. It was a pretty wallet when I first got it (which was
really only a few months ago), but it is not passing the test of time. I
need to spring for a better quality wallet - I'm just really picky about
the style and so it may take a while to find the perfect one. I carried
the one before this XOXO number for years and years, but it was a more
durable leather, not flimsy fabric.

HITS

Paula Dorf almost EVERYTHING - Perfect Glo, powder shadows, no-color
powder, powder blush, cream blush, brushes, eye-lite, magic stick #2,
concealer, Mirage lipstick

Peter Thomas Roth Co-oxygen Q-10 Wrinkle Repair
Peter Thomas Roth Max Retinol Wrinkle Repair

--both of the above are effective, but seem to take a while to sink in
- I may be using too much which is a typical fault of mine

Peter Thomas Roth Power C 20 Anti-oxidant Serum Gel
Peter Thomas Roth Oxygen Eye Relief (for lids and orbital bone)
Peter Thomas Roth Power C Eye Complex (for undereye - directions warn
not to use on lids)
Peter Thomas Roth Anti-aging Cleansing Gel - (I doubt there is
anything truly anti-aging about it, but it smells like fresh peaches
and feels good)
Peter Thomas Roth Hydrating Nutrient Masque - feels good now, but I
know I am going to love it even better when the weather gets colder

Peter Thomas Roth AHA Exfoliating Foot Cream - had gotten away from
using this and re-purchased - my feet were thrilled

MISSES

Peter Thomas Roth Power C Firming Spritz - not sure it's fair to call
it a miss, but not very exciting

Paula Dorf Hotta Hotta lipstick - shocking orange - not for me,
especially for Fall - not even close to what the website or Sephora
showed (often the case with lipstick)

Woo-hoo! Only 86 more shopping days 'til Christmas!

fragrance I've sniffed in a long time.
*Bill Parcells -- I still hate hime for firing Joe and
Bill but at least he's trying to make up for it;
*Ultima II Full Moisture Lipcolor in First Blush,
Mocha Ice and Dovefeather,
*ALL my "dusty lavender/purple/plum/violet" e/s
-- they're all terrific,
*Aveeno Shaving Gel,
*Aveda Purifying Gel Cleanser,
*Murad Refreshing Cleanser,
*Dove Beautifully Clean shampoo,
*Suave Tropical Coconut Conditioner.

Dove Self-foaming Cleanser -- I don't hate this as much as
I did when I first tried it, but the smell was hard to
overcome. Still, it's a decent formula for those with
oily skin, which is good for warm weather, but not for the
weather we have coming up.
*Aveda shampoos -- however much I may like the skincare and
makeup, I simply can't tolerate the odor of the Aveda shampoos.
If I smell the sickly stench of rosemary and mint again I may
throw up.
*Suave shampoos/conditioners -- who'da thunk?
*Olay moisturizers -- the facial kind, anyway.
*The Raiders. What WHINERS. Would somebody over there please
slap Rich Gannon for me and tell him I said to grow up?

I second this hit! I also got one of their hooded sweaters and I *love* it.
Their cords and ribbed V-neck sweaters are also extremely nice.

*BBW Warm Vanilla Sugar. This scent is so wonderful, and it really puts me
into an autumn mood every morning.
* TJ Maxx, for having Coach! I adore my new bag, and it was a fantastic
price.
* Maybelline Liquid Eyes in Timeless Pink. Wow! No creasing, and it stays
in place all day! Very impressive, and the color is lovely.
* Clinique e/s in sugarberry. This is the *perfect* purple for me.. very
sheer, with no glitter. So pretty!

Misses:
*Maybelline Liquid Eyes in All Day Cafe. It looked like I had dirt all over
my eye.

Maybes:
*Neutrogena Blackhead Eliminating mask. I just got this a couple days ago
and so far, there's no difference.. but I will give it another week and I'll
report back.

Hits:

•Â*dove skincare - LOVE this stuff - the lotion cleanser (actually all three
are good), the toner, the day creme. Will be picking up the night creme after
Diane H's post.

•Crede Hair products - another fabulous line. Bought from adiscountbeauty.com
which delivered the next day! they were terrific and lovely emails were
exchanged. Very helpful .the hair products are perfect for my processed long
hair - very gentle shampoo with teeny bubbles and so clean but moisturizing
feeling. The ER treatment is awesome.

• Frederic Fekkai RX Protein Hair Mask, recommended here by Rosie Mac, and
she was spot-on about it! It totally smooths and silkens my hair without
silicones and really "feeds" the dryness.

•Â*Mac Face and Body foundation - I know this is old hat but I re-bought this
in N1 (whew the colors run VERY DARK, beware people) and it's just gorgeous -
very sheer and non-makeupy and lasts a long time.

• Bumble & bumble hair powder in brown. Delivers amazing body and volume and
will be good for needing to touch up the roots days. Actually I love B&b stuff.
It does what it promises in every product. Also loving the B&b Styling Creme -
makes my hair smooth and full of body and does what I tell it (I know this has
silicone in it so I use sparingly).

•Mastey Tratee shampoo - this stuff is so gentle and non-SLS and cleans and
no stripping. Only 8 bucks a tube! so worth it.

Misses
•Â*Schick Intuition razor - wow this is a DEATHTRAP. I have 6 (itchy!) scars
on my legs from using this one week. No way will I ever use it again and just
replenished my supply of Venus razor refills thank god. The intuition is
clumsy, really a waste of money (the soapy part wears down in like a day) and
misses vast expanses of leg hair. And - it totally nicks the shite out of me.

•Â*Estee Lauder Ideal Matte foundation - I wanted to like this and the
texture is amazing, but the colors SUCK. The three lightest shades (Fresco
(hahahhaha this is like medium Keromask concealer + Keromask yellow tint
corrector so it's a muddy mustard yellow shade); Ivory (can we say Hello Merle
Norman PINK ROSE dark brown) and one more I forget) are all way way way too
dark, orange and look like cake frosting. Much like the Revlon Colorstay Stay
Natural crappe.
A great thing to do is to put a little swab of a questionable foundation on
your wrist and then go out in the sun. You wil ask yourself: Is that crappe
really on my face? YIKES. I Know the wrist is whiter than the rest of my face,
but this is a good test to see a true color. Kind of like putting a color on
paper. And, back to what I was saying - the EL Ideal Matte is SO retrograde -
so pink/orange and horrible. Sad.

Well, I'm glad you tried it. We seem to see eye-to-eye on
foundations most of the time, so I appreciate your research
for my benefit (even if you didn't know it was for my benefit.)
thx! :=)

HITS:

BBW White Tea Line Prevention Serum...using up the second of the freebie
samples, and I like this stuff better than APW or Regenerist or EL Idealist.
It's soothing, lightly scented, and sinks in very quickly. I use City Block
for a sunscreen on top and the combo makes a nice base for my foundation.

EL Pure Color Lip Vinyl in Vinyl Berry - I like this, esp. over the gwp Pure
Color lippie in Fig. Very pretty. Unfortunately, last time I opened the lip
vinyl the mirror had come unglued and stuck to the gloss.

Mark Fresh Kiss lippie in Berry Sexy - nice shade that lasts surprisingly
long and fade evenly.

Reese's lip balm...finally figured out that a balmy balm is much better
under l/s or gloss than a slippery one. And the choc/peanut butter flavor is
nice in the am with my coffee. But only under certain lip products. Guess I
need to find an unscented balmy balm.

Goodwill....found a shiny, almost patent leather looking, snakeskin
textured, black, double breasted, belted car length coat. Slightly used,
just enough to make it supple instead of stiff. Love it. $5
Also a reversible down vest in khaki and a hunter green with a hood zipped
into the color. Brand new, no name. $6
And a bright red Bugle Boy hunting vest with all kinds of pockets and such.
It's a little large and kinda strange, but will be fun to wear doing my
artsy things. $4

So, yeah, I blew my moratorium long ago, but at least this month my thrills
were cheap thrills.

MISSES:

BBW Benefit Line Firming Lotion (some vanilla scent) - I can finally shave
and bathe in something besides Aveeno. OMG. Had to wear long pants all
during the nice, warm Sept. weather. Honestly, it took almost a month to
stop itching and for the rash to go away.

I guess that's it, bc I really have been trying to use up my stashes before
trying new things. It's hard.

Black Maxx NY handbag: The perfect size for me. Small enough that I won't
carry excessive amounts of stuff and just big enough for the stuff I really
need to carry plus small amounts of makeup

Clari-T pore cleansing strips. Better than Biore strips were when they still
worked!

Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer. My ultimate lemming item. I was shocked
at how small the container is (0.63 oz of foundation?) and even more shocked
to realize that it ought to last a very, very long time, even if I end up
using it practically daily. A very definite hit.

Kevyn Aucoin Liquid Cyber Lip gloss in Alurabliss

Paula Dorf foundation brush

No misses to my recollection...

I got mine at Whole Foods Market. The website is listed on the box so if you
can't find then at Whole Foods, you can order them from the site. Biore
Strips worked once upon a time and they must have changed them because they
don't do jack anymore. The Clari-T strips work much better than the Biores
ever did and they're cheaper per strip! Here's the link:

BTW, as with Biore Strips as they used to be, they bind tightly to the skin
so it may hurt a bit when removing them.

Hits:
*Dove skincare: sensitive skin cleanser, foaming cleanser, toner and the
night cream
*L'Oreal Glam Shine in Diva - this stuff is gorgeous! So shimmery and
pretty, yet not cheesy at all!
*Revlon Lash Fantasy Mascrara - nice and makes my lashes look extra long,
but it gets clumpy if I stall between the coats of the primer and the
mascara.
*Revlon Sheer Lip Glide in Sheerly Raspberry - I think I need some more of
these shades in the Sheer line. Very nice and more pigmented than expected,
which is a good thing!
*EL Paradise Petals blush - very pink and pretty, but it's not for someone
who wants a warm tone blush. This stuff is very cool toned pink.
*The GWP I got with the EL blush - it came with a fabulous peachy blush and
I also love the Sugar Honey lipstick and the mascara I got! A real winner
for a GWP.
*KA SSE sample in the second lightest shade that Michele317 sent to me!
Love this, including the shade! May have to purchase a full size one of
these days.
*C&C California black scoopneck long bell sleeve tee - I want more C&C tees!
*Lilly BCA scarf - so pretty and versatile!
*The jewelry from Target, especially the Isaac stuff! I wish the IM clothes
were cooler like the jewelry. I love the new cz chandelier earrings I got
there too (not Isaac), and it's about as nice as the ones Nordies carries,
but a fraction of the price. I got so many compliments!
*The Non-Trilby leather jacket from Target (the Trilby one is very nice too,
but was too boxy for me) It's the same Merona brand with the same soft
leather, but the style is hip length with buttons down and a band around the
waist area and a slight flare below.
*Target in general - I love this store so much that I feel deprived if I
haven't visited it in two weeks!
*Flower (silk fabric) pins from Rampage - very similar to the BR ones, but
half the price.

So-So:
*Maybelline Wonder Finish in Porcelain Ivory - very nice smooth coverage,
but it makes me look a tad too unnatural looking, and the color is a tad too
pink.

Misses:
None really, but I'm mad at Saks since I still haven't received my Stella
McCartney tee (after nearly 3 weeks)!! I'm going to notify them this week
if I still haven't received it.

*Jane Iredale loose powder. I got three sample from WTF, one is too dark,
but the other two work quite well. This stuff is beautiful.
* Maybelline Volum' Express.
* L'Oreal Double Extend. Nice feathery lashes, easy to comb and reapply
without looking like TammyFaye.
* MAC Capricious Lippie
* The Gap: Black A line stretchy skirt, two gorgeous sweaters (cardigan and
patch elbow sleeve) in beautiful shades of red, ummm two 3/4 sleeve length
shirts in ummm ::whispering:: black
* Two fun scarves from Accessorize: Black with white wavy lines, a striped
one with purple, reds, oranges, and grey.
* Brown suede shoes from Dune
* Autumn! This season is always a hit for me

Rediscovered in stash:
*EL Minute Makeup Creme Stick Foundation in Sunlight. My undereye area
really likes this. It is a bit more slippy than the MAC concealers, but
works and doesn't crease, look dry and crepey.
* Benefit ooh la lift. It feels good and highlights where I need it. I use
it on the very upper cheekbone area/lower eye socket.

Misses:
OoO Regenerist Sample
L'Oreal Sample of some eye cream with Boswelox.

I'm glad I didn't pay much, just the cost of a magazine which I enjoyed
more.

would spend more than 2x the amt in tailoring to make it work
boo!

to post about the Pascal dinner there.

Becca glossy lip tints. What a great product. I LOVE it!! I got three colors
and I wish I had gotten more!

Francesca Guerrera shadows.... oh boy is this a winner too! Love the
texture, the slight shimmer. The easy way it makes my eyes look so much
better. Her foundation brush is nice too.
BTW if you are in LA, she will be at Barneys on 10/18.....
AFLA??

Davines hair care... the deep conditioner
Kiehls deep conditioner (have gone through half a tub)
MD Skincare alpha beta peel home facial system. 3 mins flat in the evening

Here's another rave for this product. I got a sample in the NM goodie bag and
almost didn't use it, as my hair is not only dry and damaged, but oily and fine
as well, and I was scared it would make my hair stick to my scalp. Actually,
it added fullness! Go figure. And it's soooo soft. I'm desperate to get
more. Where can I get the best price for this, online or at NM?

Hit:
Michael Kors Sheer. I'm drawn to gardenia fragrances and this has
just enough spice in it to make it a nice summer-to-fall scent. The
regular Michael is a bit much for me, but the Sheer is just my speed!
The accompanying Barefoot Body Cream is decadent, too....and at $25, a
much better deal than the $$$ body cream or lotion. MKors Sheer is
the first fragrance I've bought since January and before purchasing
it, I tried on several other new ones that I liked, namely Burberry
(Brit and Tender Touch), Bvlgari Omnia and Armani Sensi. It actually
felt good to put away the citrusy fragrances away for the summer.

Geoffrey Beene black/white tweed trousers. These sit high on the
waist and have a languid, KHepburnish drape. Very comfortable and
versatile.

Crabtree & Evelyn Almond Shower Gel and Body Cream. I bought these on
sale last spring for use this fall. The scent is a subtle, harmonious
base for CSP Vanille Amande and the formulas are gentle.

Neutrogena Glimmer lip gloss. A Walgreen's deal/lark, but I really
like the texture and the whispery goldness of this gloss. It adds
some dimension to some of the sheer reds I'm not ready to put away
yet, like BB Ruby Stain and Clinique Mosture Sheer Rich Cherry, giving
them a little bit of punch for fall.

TBS Vitamin E Cream. This is such a nice, plain, gentle cream. It
makes no miracle claims, but I alternated my sample with a Vitamin C
cream and found they balanced each other nicely. I'd buy a full size
for the cold winter months.

Maybe:
Dove Cleansing Pillows. These are fun, but almost too much for one
use. I cut them into two half-moon shapes and get plenty of cleansing
from each half (and even then, they're a once a week thing.)

Miss:
Avon Clinical (via sample). A week's not enough to tell much of an
effect, but I'm not sure I'd use a jar because I found strange
pinky-grey putty color somewhat offputting. Scent was light and
inoffensive. I personally find the Anew Ultimate more pleasant to
use.

Still have the samples from the NM gig to plow through and my DKNY
tights to open, but thankfully the "miss" cost nothing.......Laurie B.
