- How to TRULY refine (like glass) bumpy, porous, uneven textured skin?
- Posted by yunity
I looked at myself in super bright daylight the other day, and noticed
how unbelievably coarse my skin looked even with primer and foundation
on it. Bleah!!! It was hideous and reminded me of an oatmeal
cookie--I had to run into shade for cover for fear of being seen. So
I want to know, how in the world can I get skin like glass, or as
close to something like that as possible? I'm open to any
suggestions, but would ideally like something I can use at home as
opposed to seeing a derm. I need something that truly works, not
something that just "visibly reduces the appearance of..." Help me?

Go to a dermatologist and see if you're a candidate for laser work or a peel.

I had good results with Estee Lauder Idealist. It's not instant, though.
I was probably on my second bottle before I really started to notice a
difference. It was one of those wow moments when I looked in a mirror in
the ladies' room at work (see, I can still remember it!) and noticed my
skin looked much less course. I've also just started using Estee Lauder
Micro-D which seems to help as well. It's not permanent, though. I
stopped using the Idealist once to try the Origins look alike. It was a
"feel alike" (still gave me the same soft silky feeling when I used it)
but after time, I found my face went back to looking more course. OTOH,
others are reporting good results with some of the other products out
there, so it may be worth experimenting. Me, if I experiment, I think
I'll alternate, rather than give up my Idealist completely.

Hi Lee--what sort of skin do you have? You're tempting me to try Idealist. Do
you use a BHA or AHA to exfoliate as well?

I use OoO Regenerist twice a day. Twice a week I give myself some type of mask
that I most often make myself. Today it was a avocado, honey and egg white
concoction.
In a book titled "Ageless Natural Beauty" there is a recipe for a mask for 'A
Porcelain Complexion-Kiwi Cleasing Mask'. It calls for 1/2 kiwi fruit, 1/4t
olive oil, 2 t white clay. Mix thoroughly, sprad over face, leave on for 30
minutes.

the words:
i was going to email this to you, but i didn't have your address.
i'm not trying to flame you, either.
a 'course' is like a class that you take.
when something is 'coarse,' it is not smooth.
just tryin' to help out.

I have no idea what type of store may carry white clay. I found a website
with some:

Thanks for the link to that site, I favorite placed it for a future purchase.
(for the clay)

I know that people tend to look askance at anything sold on an
infomercial, but I've been using the Susan Lucci Youthful Essence home
microdermabrasion thingie for a few months now, and I think it helps a
good deal. My skin is smoother, and definitely clearer. Indeed, when I
ran out of the cream, I found myself emailing the company, saying,
"Where's my autoship?!"
I'm sure it's not as effective as a peel from a derm, but it's a helluva
lot cheaper, and it's made my skin look a lot better -- enough so that
my favorite day to day foundation is now the Skinlights Illuminating
stuff, which is *very* sheer.

Health food-type stores with big skin care sections are a good bet, like

What about exfoliating to get rid of some of the dry skin. Also try an AHA
or BHA lotion for additional help. If you google AHA or BHA lotions, I
think you will find a ton of recommendations.

try microdermabrasion! i did 6 sessions and there was a difference in
my skin, more even toned, less bumpy. i previously had to use
concleaer but not anymore. of course after i stopped microderabrasion
my skin was not as nice looking but i think that if i had done monthly
maintenance sessions after my 6 treatments i would have been able to
keep the clear skin look. i don't think microderm cream is the same
thing, i also had lots of compliments on my skin after the 6
treatments and i have never had nice skin! yes the acne indentations
are still there, but much less deep! the treatment takes about
45minutes and i leave the office with slight reddness that goes away
in about 10 minutes, no down time. HTH

Here's what has tranformed my skin:
AM:
OoO Daily cleanser with microbeads
2x a week mix PTRs botanical buffing beads into OoO for extra scrub
Lauder's Idealist
OoO age defying moisturizer
PM:
Same as above but without the PTR beads
It has really worked for me!

I used to get small bumps on my forehead that seemed to be clogged
pores, but they rarely got inflamed. I think they were caused by
sunscreens or some other product that was too moisturizing for me. If
this is what you've got, I'd recommend trying Awake clear gel cleanser
for combination skin--it has totally eliminated the bumps for me.

Hmmm, how to describe my skin... Used to be oily as a teen and younger
adult. Now with age, it's getting drier; at least I thought it was, but
now that I've been more careful with skin care it doesn't feel as dry. I
think part of it was the desperate need for exfoliation that made it
feel drier than it is. Anyhow, it's shall we say "middle aged" skin <G>.
It's also red and splotchy - could be mild rosacea, but I haven't seen a
derm.
I don't use BHA or AHA, I don't think, but I do use "Origin's Never A
Dull Moment Skin-Brightening face polisher" with fruit enzymes (I don't
think that contains either?). And I periodically use a mechanical
exfoliator, lately Origin's "Swept Away".
Anyhow, I've been really happy with the Idealist. Of course (that's for
David <G>), I'd be happier if it was cheaper, but at least it's not as
expensive as some things. I actually started using it after I got it in
a GWP. ALthough I didn't get the good effects immediately, it also gives
my skin a very smooth feeling and makes foundation go on more easily.
You can read about it on the EL website.
Well, after that build up, if you try it, I hope it works as well for
you.
Lee
PS - David, I really do know how to spell coarse. It's just what one of
my deaf friends describes as a "hearing mistake". She says that deaf
people don't make that sort of spelling error, because they don't hear
that the words sound the same.
