Greetings, I am a newbie here, though lurking and enjoying this group,
since quite a long time. I suffer from acne rosacea too, and would be
most insterested in your comments. Of course I get my prescriptions from
my doctor, but I am so tired of all those antibiotics courses...

Oh, and I have this rare solar urticaria too, which makes me a good
candidate for the worst skin in the universe.

any sun exposure, however brief. Derms have never really given it a name,
besides serious intolerance.

My boyfriend suffers from rosacea and he tried everything besides
presicription remedies until he finally gave up and went to the
dermatologist. He was given anti-biotics and a gel-like lotion to apply. He
is off the pills now, and uses that gel 2x daily after washing with Cetaphil
bar soap. This regimen has dramatically reduced his rosacea, although I
understand that treatment of rosacea is an individual issue.

A bit hard to explain in English, but I will try.

First, I get a rash all over the parts of my body that have been exposed
to the sun or even through very thin clothes. The rash is similar to the
one you get with measles only more swollen and *raised*, with
hives. Yes, it itches so much I go mad and have to take
antihistamines.

My dermatologist says it is an mad immunological reaction to certain sun
wavelengths. It can be improved if you are exposed gradually
more and more to those wavelengths.

I think you could have a mild allergy to the sun.

AKA, "sun posioning". I have the tendency towards it too, so I stay out of the
sun as much as possible, and when I am going to be in strong sunlight for
prolonged periods, thanks to an a.f rec, I've found Coppertone Spectra3 is a
sunscreen that's cut down on my reactions a great deal. (My mom has the same
problem and when she was planning her trip to Bermuda last month, her
dermatologist told her to use Fallene Total Block. I did a quick search of the
ingredient listing, and it was more or less the same as the Coppertone, so she
went with that at 1/5th the price.)

If you have severe reactions to the sun then please don't waste time--see a
doctor. Don't rely on anedoctal evidence on USENET (including my info above).

Indeed. Think that, in my case, the condition only got worse and worse
along the years. At first, when I was 8, or even 11 years old, the
reaction was very similar to yours (maybe the ozone hole had something to
do????) So, take care and go to an allergology unit first and they will
refer you to a dermatologist/*allergowhatever* who really knows about it.

I had that from taking antibiotics and it took a long time to build an
immunity against it
Also I have very light skin so I burn easily and therefore stay our of the
sun
I use SPF 45 Neutrogenia UVA/UVB with Parsol
which also, it's nice to know, doesn't leave white marks on black clothes
I had to buildin up good bacteria in my gut, which takes a while to work
properly without supplements

What you describe sounds very much like my reaction to the sun. Yes,
antihistamines help, but I've never found that gradually increasing my sun
exposure helped. There is never a tolerance built up. I can't stand 5
minutes of sun exposure at the beginning of the summer, can't stand it
mid-summer nor at the end.
