- Leave the house without make-up?
- Posted by Els
This morning when I woke up, I really wanted to go out and get a newspaper
before breakfast. But I looked in the mirror and thought I looked terrible.
And I really didn't feel like putting make up on and doing my hear yet. So I
didn't get my newspaper ...
Do you recognize this situation? I think it's stupid, but I couldn't help
it.

I'd feel a bit awkward wearing sunglasses on a chilly, grey, rainy day ;-)

Baseball cap, or a hoodie a la "8 Mile". Or you could shield yourself with
a large golf umbrella a la Martha Stewart.

On a chilly, grey, rainy day you could use an umbrella which would hide you
from your neighbors. Or a hooded raincoat. Or just run in and out so
quickly that no one would see your face. Or assume that other people are
also not perfect first thing in the morning.

Thanks for the advice, but I think I'll just get myself a subscription on
the newspaper ;-)

I've gone out without makeup lots of times. I'd rather not, but I have. I
mean, not out to dinner or shopping in a nice mall or anything, but if it's
just for a newspaper or maybe a run to get doughnuts for my son or perhaps a
quick stop into the 7-11 for milk...yes. Hey, this is my face! I hope it
doesn't scare people, but it's my face bare or covered with paint. I do try to
slap on a bit of lipstick no matter what, but sometimes I just don't. --

You're absolutely right, that's why I did feel stupid ...

i find it quite sad, that you can't leave your house without make-up!

I'm pretty sure of that! I just have my weak, self-conscious moments now and
then ...

Personally, I never wear makeup. I can't be bothered. However, I love
clothes, shoes and accessories and I'm extremely vain about my hair.
I think it is good to be somewhat concerned about appearance. I hate people
who walk around like they've completely given up on life. I mean, it's
about self respect...if you don't pay attention to how you present yourself
than how do you expect people to treat you in kind?

have one
makeup free day. I think it has more to do with wanting to look good when
you
leave the house. I never want to feel that I have to apologize for my
appearance
no matter where I am and that can be with or without makeup.

I recently realized that I've been leaving the house without makeup *a lot*
these days. It probably has to do with going to more fitness classes that
are spread throughout the day, so I don't bother with makeup. I do look much
better with makeup on, but I look fine without it as long as my dead-looking
lips have a little lip liner all over them. Other people might think
differently about how I look, but is not always important to me. I like to
"feel my best", which I have realized is not the same for me as "looking my
best". Sometimes it might include looking my best but often I can feel my
best without looking my best in every aspect.

Same here. I've been working out more than ever, usually mid-day, so I go to
work with lipstick only on. More and more I find that even after workouts I'm
not applying full make-up, just lipstick and or gloss. You can't get the glow
you get from an hour of cardio in a bottle, IMHO.
I never expected to be wearing *less* make-up as I got older, but there you
have it. I was channel surfing this AM when the infamous Alexis Vogel
informercial came on, and I thought, yes, this less make-up thing is good. :-)

Not me. I wear sunglasses regardless of the weather outside. Mine are
prescription and tinted yellow so people just think it's part of my "look".
I agree though - if I'm going out without makeup it's really sunglasses and
lipstick.

i used to feel much more self-conscious in the past than I do now. Now I shop,
go out to dinner, etc. without it. This mainly has to do with yoga, as I
often meet up with people after class and I hate sweating through makeup so I
just don't bother. The only exception to this is when I'm breaking out. I
usually dab a bit of concealer on to hide things, as even the teeniest zit
really drives me insane.

I do sympathize, especially the older I get and have to deal with puffiness,
redness, frizzball hair, etc. Putting makeup on top of morning face isn't
usually a pretty option either, esp if you went out the night before! Yeah,
yeah, yeah, no one else really cares but I do. Here's what you can do:
Wear exercise clothes and shoes......the real thing, be it yoga, running,
whatever.....and pull your hair back tight and/or wear a baseball cap.
Sunglasses if it's sunny. Let people assume you just finished working out.
Even better if you have just finished working out but not required.
HTH!

I think I just got a bit "traumatized" by the number of times people asked
me if I didn't sleep enough, of if I didn't feel well, when I felt great!! I
just wasn't wearing eye-liner ...

I understand it. In my late teens and into my mid-20s I *never* left the
house without perfect makeup. If I thought it wasn't just right, I washed
it off and started over. Same with my hair, if it didn't look that way I
wanted, I'd wet it and start over. I got up before my first husband and put
my makeup on, lord knows he couldn't see me without makeup! Totally
neurotic. I know now that this came from years of being told by my father
that I wasn't pretty - the terms he used were much more brutal. Well,
having raised 3 stepchildren and one of my own and growing older, I've
gotten much looser. I can even (shocker) go shopping without makeup, thanks
to my present husband and a wonderful brother-in-law who gave me one of the
best compliments ever. After a family dinner when I was under a huge amount
of stress, I just didn't feel like putting on paint, so I didn't. Mike went
home and told my sister that he couldn't understand why I didn't do that
more often since I was beautiful(!) without. Let me tell you, that helped
more than a year of therapy!
