A little late :/ I installed the plugs and applied VERY LITTLE grease on the threads of the plugs. The torque is 156 in-lb for those interested (98 Accord Ex as well as V6's). Hopefully the grease won't cause too much trouble since it doesn't even raise above the height of the separate threads. I don't think the old spark plugs had any anti-seize compound because it took a decent amount of force to unscrew them and they were "a little" rusty. --Viktor
- Honda won't start in cold (below freezing) weather
- Posted on 02-15-2004 | 24 Comments
Thanks everyone for your helpful info. Here's the resolution of my 2000 Odyssey not starting in freezeing weather. The problem was a new key I had made at a hardware store just made before the weather turned freezing. The Odyssey needs a special "security" key blank or the engine will just turn over and not start. It was just a coincidence that the weather turned freezing the first time I tried the new key. My mechanic solved the mystery when he saw a special "key" light flashing on the dash...

Sometimes, Honda discovers a unique or rare problem deemed so unacceptable that if the car is brought to the dealer for service and if the owner is original, then problem will be repaired at no cost. One such problem, that took four hours to replace a maybe $400 part, cost me nothing on an Accord with 98,000 miles and 9.5 years old. Yes, that many miles, that old, and I paid nothing. No links will be provided on net. But get access to those 'proprietary service bulletins to learn even many...

Hi SA, I have read about your issues, and I guess what my original comments were referring to is that I have never had any premature wear/quality/reliability concerns with any of the Hondas I have owned. Example: In May of 1988, I purchased a new '88 Civic and kept it for 7 years. I did literally NOTHING to the car except oil changes + regular maintenance (i.e. wear items). I did NOT do the periodic Honda-recommended maintenance checks (at 6000, 12000, 24000 miles, etc.), as I have always felt...

Sounds maybe like a vacuum leak that isn't leaking until some metal component heats up and causes a separation of parts somewhere. Just my guess. If it was an exhaust problem it would be doing it all the time and I don't see how an exhaust problem would cause a high idle. CaptainKrunch

Ok Andrew, Did the rocking test by hand like you suggested and great news I saved 15% on my car insurance with Geico. Actually, I rocked it and it seemed perfectly fine, the engine mounts seemed rock solid. But the car does idle exactly @ 750 - 800 rpms. I didn't do the neutral test tho. 1. I do believe the idle and timing are set properly because I had the timing belt replaced last week and the engine seems perfectly fine

The "official" way to fix it is by replacing the out of spec parts. You might want to reconsider the dealer for a warranty alignment. Otherwise, you need to find a frame alignment shop (the places that straighten twisted cars after accidents). They will be able to correct any angles that are wrong by either replacing parts or bending the ones you have back into spec. Much to be learned by experience and mistakes. Often one need not take it to a discount mechanic. One should be doing much service personally. Money is not saved in 'dollars per hour' but it does save money overall. And 'doing it yourself' teaches things necessary to differentiate good mechanics from bad. And yes, also a 'fun' to it. For example, fluid changes should never require even a discount mechanic. To save money, a Honda shop manual is a given necessity (even though manual is not...

- Posted on 02-13-2004 | 6 Comments
I love my wife and kids, and want to make sure that whatever car we're driving is safe and fun and economical -- so I'll pass on the Hummer and the Mercedes :-). The Element is definitely a fun vehicle --great for a trip to the beach for example-- but it has only come close to being a safe car by 2004 standards. A superior side airbag like the one in the Ford Escape/Mazda Tribute would put the Honda Element in the "Good" category on both the side-impact and frontal impact collisions. There's...
