Instructions for valve adjustment on 98 Civic
Posted by disallow

Hey everyone,

I need to do a valve adjustment on my civic, but I have
never done a valve adjustment on a car (just small engines).

Does anyone have instructions on how to do this? Maybe
illustrated as well?

I've never worked on a '98 but typically on a Honda 4 cylinder engine you
remove the spark plugs and set the motor at TDC such that the
distributor/cam is in the #1 firing position. At this position, adjust the
intake valves for cylinders 1 and 2 and exhaust valves for cylinders 1 and
3. Rotate the crank another 360° so you're back at TDC except now the
distributor/cam will be in the #4 firing position. At this position, adjust
the intake valves for cylinders 3 and 4 and exhaust valves for cylinders 2
and 4.

The valves are adjusted with the engine cold. The valve clearances are
listed on the under hood sticker and are measured between the adjuster screw
and the top of the valve. Also plan on replacing the valve cover gasket,
spark plug tube seals, and grommets if they're more than about 2 years or
30,000 miles old.

If you don't have a 4 cylinder engine or you want to follow a slightly more
complicated procedure, then you can get a copy of the Helm factory service
manual at http://www.helminc.com. By the way, the service manual is a good
investment if you're going to be working on your car on a regular basis.
They're much more detailed than a Hayne's or Chilton manual.
