Hi All,
I'm looking at a 2002 Civic DX-G 4 dr sedan (AT, AC, CD, etc.), It has 38
000 kms (23 600 miles), and the dealership is asking $14 995 CDN.
Is this a fair price? Any advice is appreciated.

Well the MSRP on a 2004 Civic DX-G is $17,700. The dealer is knocking off
$2700 which amounts to 15% off for a 2 year old car. Personally, I'd go
with the piece of mind of the new car but if money's tight, the used one
isn't that bad. It's not a rip off, but I wouldn't call it a deal either.
I'd offer them $14,500 and ask them to put new Michelin tires on as part of
the deal (the dealer get these cheap). Besides, at 38,000 KM, the factory
tires will need replacing soon anyway, not to mention they're Firestones and
suck big time. Of course, only you can judge how far you can push in the
negitiations.

Thanks Sean, but at the www.honda.ca web site, I'm getting different prices
that the ones you noted; are you in the US?
If you go to that web site, a 2004 DX-G with AT (not 5 speed) has a pre-tax
price of $19 710 CDN. If I was going brand new, it looks like the best deal
is the new SE model. Its pre-tax price with AT is $18810 CDN.
This dealer that has the 2002 said they'd be willing to "move" on the
price...we'll see. If I could get them down another $1000-$1500, that may be
what I'll do. I'm going there tomorrow- will advise. (PS: I couldn't agree
more with your tire observations!)

Go to www.edmunds.com and throw in the particulars for some ideas on what's a
fair price. It will ask for your location, ultimately, so you'll have to fudge
that detail somewhat.

I think you're getting a good deal for a 2 year old car at that milage. Make
sure everything is working smooth before you purchase.

I got my price from the Canadian site but I left it with 5-speed manual. I
also didn't include the money for freight and PDI ($1010 rip off) since I
only wanted to mention MSRP. I suppose the used car wouldn't have this
charge so that does make it look more appealing. I stand my original
statement that you should try to negotiate that price lower though. Used
cars are priced assuming some negotiation. If you walk in and pay sticker
price for a used car, they laugh all the way to the bank. I've also found
with Honda that they're more likely to throw in "goodies" than to lower the
price, which is why I suggested asking for new tires instead.

I went to a local Honda Dealership, and they have a "brand new, zero-mile"
2003 Civic DX coupe, with AT & FULL WTY (wty doesn't start till the car is
registered). It's their last 2003 in stock, and they've priced it at $15990
CDN. One year ago list was $18110 (I saw the invoice this afternoon.)!
It is pretty bare-bones however: no AC, CD,cruise, etc
