The first reported case of AIDS in Japan — a homosexual man, who
apparently contracted the disease while in the U.S. — was in 1985,
although two hemophiliacs had died earlier from what now is believed to
have been AIDS. Eighteen years later, the disease is still not even a blip
on Emiko's radar.
But it is unfair to single her out as being reckless or particularly
wanton. A recent Newsweek report cited a joint Japan-U.S. study that found
that of 602 teens ages 15-19 surveyed in Tokyo's Shibuya district, 43%
said they had five or more casual sexual partners. Around 20% of
16-year-olds surveyed in rural areas also reportedly had several such "sex
friends."
