I just read that South Africa's HIV/AIDS rate is rapidly approaching
50% of the adult population. I'm not quite sure if that is true, but
it does sound quite probable.

The source went on to suggest that at the current rate of infection
the population of Africa will be largely wiped out within two
generations.

Surely something other than sexual transmission must be at work here.
Even among the North American homosexual community where HIV is
rampant and extremely transmissable through anal sex, the infection
rate does not even come close to 50% (though it is quite high indeed,
the true rate being kept semi-secret for political reasons).

I suspect that the recent report I read is true - it claimed that
Africa's astronomical HIV rate is caused by the reuse of hypodermic
needles. Even before HIV broke out in the Western world, Western
medicine knew that reusing hypodermic needles could spread other
diseases such as hepatitis. And when HIV appeared around 1981-1982
the concept of using new, sterile needles became almost a religion.
So 20 years later Africans are still reusing needles and dropping
like flies from HIV as a result. It is not likely due to a shortage
of clean needles, the Western nations have been extremely generous
in supplying them to African countries. I suspect that the needles
have been stolen and sold by corrupt officials.
