Roche suspends HIV research

Is that the fat lady I hear singing in the background?

You will no doubt have noted that I've been away from this newsgroup
for a while. Don't worry, I'm not dead: I've just been getting on
with life. It seems that during my absence the tumbleweed has moved
in and this is now a ghost newsgroup.

Hardly surprising, really. The HIVAIDS theory is all but dead. Even
Roche is giving up on new HIVAIDS research, see

Swiss pharmaceutical company Roche Holding AG will suspend its HIV
research because none of its pending medicines represent significant
improvement over existing drugs, a company spokeswoman said on Friday.

"Research scientists currently working in HIV will be reassigned to
other activities," Linda Dyson, a spokeswoman in Roche's U.S. office
in New Jersey, said in an e-mail.

Dyson confirmed an e-mail sent on Wednesday to some activists
informing them of the decision. In that e-mail, the company said it
"decided to refocus our resources within virology on diseases in which
we can deliver substantial improvements over existing medications."

Dyson declined to specify how much Roche has been investing in HIV
research.

The decision would seem to draw Roche’s disappointing history with HIV
research to a close. The company is widely viewed as an important
innovator in the field, yet never quite managed to reap the benefits
of its innovations. An early candidate, called Hivid (zalcitabine) was
among the first antiretrovirals to win approval but was so toxic that
few chose to use it. It was abandoned in 2005. Another drug, Fuzeon
(enfuvirtide) was the first approved drug to prevent HIV fusion with
target cells, but it was difficult to use (it had to be injected) and
expensive, and was quickly shoved aside by drugs that later appeared
on the market.
