I commented that while pumping million of pounds into HIVAIDS aboard,
the UK was cutting funding to similar services at home.

As if to prove my point, here's a quote from a news item published
today about cuts in funding for HIVAIDS in Brighton.

Brighton and Hove City Council is classed as a hot spot in the UK for
HIV and Aids but many of the groups which provide support are in
financial difficulty.

Open Door, an HIV charity in Kemp town providing a wide range of
services in a supportive and confidential environment, closed in
September because of a lack of funding.

Councillor Bill Randall has put the issue on the agenda of the next
full council meeting on Thursday to mark World Aids Day on Monday.

He said: "In recent years, government cuts have slashed funding for
many essential HIV and Aids services.

The US is pumping $50 billion into HIVAIDS worldwide, predominantly
Africa, see Usenet article <739.1226101067.20081107@hiv-poz.co.uk or

Meanwhile it's slashing funding for HIVAIDS services back home.

Last spring, when officials at St. Vincent's Hospital Manhattan began
organizing a fundraiser for its Comprehensive HIV Center, it didn't
seem that unreasonable to start ticket prices at $500 each.

Now, as the economic turmoil deepens, $500 "is a huge amount of money
for people," said Matt Baney, the center's administrative director.

"I'm not sure exactly what the turnout's going to be like," Baney said
of the Tuesday fundraiser at Manhattan's Gotham Hall. "We're being
much more realistic in our expectations."

At the same time, St. Vincent's HIV center faces city funding cuts as
New York grapples with a projected multibillion dollar budget deficit
_ cuts that will force the center to eliminate a program that provides
time-sensitive treatment for people who have been potentially exposed
to HIV. The city's infection rate is three times the national average,
a center spokeswoman said.

Why is it that wealthy countries, such as the US and UK, throw
billions of dollars at HIVAIDS in Africa while at the same time cut
funding for it at home?

I believe the answer is simple.

In their own countries politicians, and those who hold the purse
strings, only have to open their eyes and look around to see that
HIVAIDS is a non-event. HIVAIDS has failed to live up to all the
threats and promises made about it throughout the 1980s. Take the UK
as an example, which has a population of over 60 million people. It
can only scrape together fewer than 200 deaths a year to attribute to
HIVAIDS, and even that figure is highly questionable.

However in countries such as South Africa, hundreds of thousands of
HIVAIDS deaths are conjured up out of nothing. At best, official
statistics attribute less than 15,000 deaths to HIVAIDS each year,
however HIVAIDS enablers proclaim that it kills over 300,000 people
there each year.
