it (tho I came from an era of a different set of drugs).

But HIV is chronic. It's there. For good. Like the hepatitis C in me,
pretty much. It's not the same.

No simple, single solutions...and thanks for posting this list. It is
a rather depressing eye-opener.

I think some of the best answers to how to get folks to rethink this
barebacking stuff will take getting barebackers to open up and be part
of the conversation.

Still--the issue of barebacking is pretty serious. It goes to the root
of the forbidden pleasures, making it all the more alluring. But I
don't think there's any way we can know how popular it is, except by
the incidence rates of HIV and STDs as a loose and probably pretty
non-specific surrogate marker.

How do we convince folks on the one hand that HIV is NOT something one

But you raise a good point. I think much of public policy IS about
controlling--or living under the delusion that we can control others.
Sure, there are some immediate, direct ways that we can. Like killing
people. Or enslaving people.

Behavior change programs and policies, however, should be predicated
on the notion of individual autonomy. People WILL choose to have sex
or not, shoot drugs or not, work or not, etc. My comments are more
directed toward how information can be shared to help people make
informed choices.

Is that meddling? One could define it that way, sure. But when people
can avoid something like HIV or reduce the risk of exposure, I think
that is helping people make choices.

I CHOSE to do drugs when I was younger. I CHOSE to let most drugs go.
(I still have the occasional cigarette...ugh....)

An even better question. That is where I think personal spiritual
beliefs and attitudes shape the way choices are made. The illusion of
existence, that maya, is the way we can shape our reality. Is the
boddhisatva vow to end suffering a path to enlightenment? Does it mean
just sitting on one's ass all day meditating? Of course not. Nor does
it mean being nought more than the energizer bunny of samsara, busily
doing and doing and doing and never pausing to reflect on the marvel
of simply breathing.

It's marvelous, temporary....yes, fear and apathy are both there. They
arise. And then they fade, like a morning erection.
