Like last month's anti-war rally was just an excuse for Marxists to
gather and praise Cuba, this AIDS parade thing is just an excuse for
gays to gather and have unprotected sex behind dumpsters.

While I may not believe in all of the mainstream junk on 'HIV/AIDS,' I
am not a homophobe, and have been disgusted by some of the homophobic
remarks I have read here and in some other forums discussing this. Any
homophobes on this list, do you think it is possible for you to debate
in this forum in a civilized manner, without resorting to using your
internet account to harass LGBT folks with homophobic remarks? Can some
not challenge some of this without gay bashing? Too much to ask? Too
difficult? This is really not helping your arguments, imo, and perhaps
the employment of homophobia by some in arguments against mainstream
'HIV/AIDS' stuff might be one reason why more have not listened to some
people's arguments in the past?

BTW, what's this little parade supposed to accomplish anyway? I hear
talk about "educating" the public, but I was educated a long time ago
and as a result I don't have AIDS. Who exactly is the target for their
education? Who could possibly be so isolated as to not have heard of
the disease and how it is spread? Are we talking about the mole people
who live in the New York subway tunnels? Are there some feral hillbilly
children living in the woods who haven't heard about it? Instead of
being just a metaphor, are there people who really live under rocks?

Only in the US and that is rapidely changing with gay men now representing
less then one half of new HIV infections in the US.
Do you honestly think unsafe sex is only occuring in the gay community? Yes
there are gay men who behave as you describe just as there are HIV positive
hetro's who behave badly. That does not however prove that such behaviour is
the norm in either population.
Prevention of HIV education in the US has had significant impact in that
without it the HIV epidemic would be much worse then it is. However it is
not nearly as effective as it needs to be in order to end the HIV epidemic
in this country. One of the reasons for the failure has been the
interference of the anti-sex education lobby in this country. The resistance
to making condoms freely available and the insistence that abstinence only
sex education curriculums be adopted by public schools plays a large role in
HIV infection rates in the US.

The other main failure has been the lack of funding to do the research
needed to identify the real scale and scope of HIV infection by identifiable
demographic groupings. No one knows how many undiagnosed HIV positive gay
men, black people, Latinos, or white hetro's there are in the US nor is
there data that describes the size of the populations most at risk for HIV
infection. Without that data it is impossible to create prevention programs
whose effectiveness can be measured or to create prevention interventions
that target there message specifically enough to be effective.

Where's the evidence that says that this is an epidemic...more people die of
bowel cancer in the UK each year than have died of AIDS in the last 25 years
in the UK (ref WHO states, UK Stats)...and the funding for this screening
programme has been delayed (£37.5m)...the funding of HIV/AIDS is,
proportionately well in excess of the numbers of people likely to be really
affected by this disease.

We should place the funding that affects the most people not a subset who,
if they thought about, could significantly reduce their own problem.
