Hi,
Things took a turn for the worse on thursday night (4 days ago). One
of the tonsil beds started bleeding without my knowledge, at about
midnight. It felt like a sore throat and swelling, so I dismissed it,
and because the bleed was near the back of the throat, the blood
wasn't entering my mouth for me to taste it and realise what was going
on. So I went to bed, and woke up at 4am, the same sensation but this
time unbearable. I started pacing about, then started to feel
nauseous, ran to the bathroom but didn't make it. Vomitted what looked
like a huge amount of blood, probably about 2 pints in reality, then
went into shock and the ambulance had to come. Got admitted into
hospital, stayed till Saturday, no further bleeding.
My haemoglobin count was still low (under 11) when they let me out,
and I can't believe how feeble I've been feeling, even standing up is
a chore. What's frustrating is that before the bleed, I was still
pretty weak and dizzy, and this has only added to it. I started doing
stuff again today even though I should've rested, because doing
nothing 14 days straight has been driving me insane. Now I feel more
irritable and achey than ever, like I'm on the verge of some major
fever. Funny, those are the exact same symptoms I was looking to rid
myself of by having the tonsillectomy! I really didn't expect to be
feeling like this 14 days on...

Hey,
You are really having a hard time with this!!!
Are you sure you are not diabetic, you know they tend to heal much
slower than other people? Being 22, it seems you should heal quicker.
I used to work with an RN who was fanatic about diabetes.
She was a diabetic also, so every time any man would have
even one symptom of diabetes she would ask if his mom was diabetic.
Most of the male diabetics' mothers were diabetic, but with some of them
it was their grandmother. Only a couple of the male diabetics appeared
to have gotten it from their Dads' side. She was actually responsible for
the diagnoses of a few (probably more) diabetics.
Anyway, if you feel like you are getting a major infection, try cranberry
fruit capsules. They're not that expensive, and they'll knock out a fever
within 8 hours. I've used them allot, and even though they are not an
antibiotic they work just as good. I usually end up using the Spring
Valley brand at Wal-Mart, 4 caps 4 times a day for 7 to 10 days. I
know you don't believe me, but they work and usually pretty fast.
Dude, make sure you drink allot of water to replace fluids you have lost.
Your blood pressure may be running low due to the blood loss which
will also make you dizzy and weak. If you're still having pressure on your
ear drums, that can also make u dizzy . Don't forget to sit for a while and
get your bearings before getting out of bed. (Hopefully your DR has a
follow-up appt scheduled?)

Hi,
Just an update on what's been happening. As I mentioned earlier in the
thread, I had a bleed, 9 days post-op. Lost about 2 units of blood,
went into hospital for about 2 days, then back out. Well I had ANOTHER
bleed 14 days post-op, went back into hospital. Lost more blood,
stayed in and bled AGAIN on the 18th day post-op (luckily while still
in hospital). They finally took me back to theatre that night, to
suture both pairs of tonsil pillars on both sides of my throat, and
pack the tonsil beds with kaltostat (a seaweed-type packing/gauze pad,
to keep pressure on the area and minimise bleeding).
Overall I've had 5 units of blood transfused, am back at home now and
feeling better (25th day post-op, still pretty weak though). The left
side of my throat has been feeling sore, and i've got an earache again
(pretty mild though). Anyone think I can safely say i'm 'in the clear'
yet? Still worried about keeping the tonsil areas clean, and further
bleeding. Sutures won't dissolve for another week, and the packing for
another 3.
Thanks.
