Tipping @ Hair Salons & Training Nights

What percentage do most of you tip at hair salons?

Also, what if you are getting a "cheap" haircut thru one of those
training night deals, do you tip less, more or don't tip at all then?

I tip 20% to everyone, including waiters and waitresses, when I get a
massage, just everything.

I tend to tip $20 regardless of the price of my cut (which has never
exceeded $70 for a cut alone) as long as I'm happy with it. If I'm unhappy,
I don't go over 15% and I don't go back. If I got a cheap hair cut, I'd
still be inclined to tip my usual amount if I were happy with it. I don't
think that I've ever been "happy" with a cheap cut, however. The best I've
gotten is "I can live with it" or "It could have been a lot worse". I can't
imagine not tipping at all. Presumably, the trainee needs to eat just as
much as a more seasoned stylist does

words:

most people tip what they'd like, not based on a percentage.
like today i got several $2 tips, and even a $1 tip (on $12.95
haircuts). but i also got a $10 tip for correcting a haircut (no
extra charge for the customer), and a $10 tip on a $14.95
(ladies) cut. additionally, i got a $5 tip on a men's $12.95 cut
that was 2 gaurd all over and took me about three minutes.

training night deals? IMO, you should tip if you're receiving a
service.

I see your point however, here is the particular circumstance I am
refering to. What if the "training night" is taking place in an
extremelly upscale salon and the people being trained are not staff
from their own salon but owners of other top salons across the US.
Now I know, the rule used to be that you don't tip owners. In this
case, however, they are in not in their own salons instead they're
students in someone else's salon (paying expensively for the
priviledge I think) What then?
How do you handle that? I was in a situation like that last summer
and I didn't know what to do. I paid close attention to the other
"models" there and no one that I saw paid a tip.

when in doubt, ask......the receptionist will/should........ know what is
expected, if anything.......training night is a give and take.....takes
longer usually, may not be perfect, could be exceptional......I would say,
if happy then tip, if not, then do not........and tips reflect just how
happy someone is.....if the service is free, then a tip according to what it
would ordinarily cost may be appropriate...........if the fee is reduced
then a tip based on that amount should be fine....this has been discussed in
depth in the past on alt fashion so googling could get a lot of additional
responses.......just my take on it...

I go to a cheap chain salon and my haircuts cost $11.95. I've gone to all sorts
of places is the past, from the cheap places to what I'd consider mid-range, and
until this place, I've never been able to get a decent haircut at the cheap
places.

Since the girl that does my hair does such a fantastic job, I tip $10. I figure
I'm still ahead of what I'd pay at a more expensive place and IMHO she deserves
it.

If you are there when they want, and for their convenience, I'd saying tipping
is inappropriate. They are paying you for your time with a haircut IMHO.

that's good for both of you....I am sure she really appreciates your larger
than usual tip and it probably gets you a little extra care in the
chair.....

Okay, I haven't had my hair cut in ten years, so I'm out of the loop
and I hope I'm not showing my barbarism, but why tip at all if you get
a hair cut you don't like? I know waiters usually make less than
minimum wage and are often taxed on the meals they serve, is the hair
cutting industry the same?

I tip 20% to my hair stylist and the same to the manicurist.
