Redken All Soft Sale
Posted by MelisaK

I was at the mall yesterday and walked passed a Hair Cuts Plus (mall type of
salon chain) and they had the 33.8 oz. (or 1 liter) bottles of All Soft
shampoo and conditioner on sale for 8.50! That is less than I have paid for
the 10 oz. bottle. I got two of each, but plan on making another run for
some more. If you have a Hair Cuts Plus in your area, you may want to check
it out. Good luck!

the words:

i was at HEB a few weeks ago and saw a liter sized bottle of
Redken shampoo (not sure what type it was) (and it was in the old
packaging!), for $26. i couldn't believe it! that's more than
it costs in salons! who would buy that?

also, there's an accompaniment to this month's issue of American
Salon addressing the issue of "diversion." that is, the
diversion of salon products to other retail outlets, be they
supermarkets, discount stores, etc.

professional salon products that are found in those type of
retail outlets cannot be guaranteed. i was reading about the
process. it usually starts with salon owners who are strapped
for cash, so they order more than they need. then they sell the
excess product to a collector, who sells the product to a mass
diverter, who defaces the tracking codes on the bottles so they
can't be traced, and then sells the products to a wholesaler.
then the wholesaler turns around and sells the product to
unsuspecting customers who think they're getting a good deal
(price wise).

many of the products you find sitting on your grocer's shelves
can be old, diluted, or counterfeit. and then what happens is
someone buys the product, and it doesn't do what it says it will
do, and then they think the whole product line sucks.

if anyone would like contact information for the manufacturers of
salon products (so that diversion can be stopped), email me.

The OP was about a sale on Redken *at a hair salon*, that wouldn't mean
product diversion. Just because the liters were on sale doesn't mean
anything. The local Pure Beauty's just had the liter sale and the liter
sizes were hella cheap. Hair Cuts Plus might not sound like one of the
"fine salons" that Redken talks about on the anti-diversion page, but
IME, Redken is not one of the exclusive lines that the really expensive
salons tend to stock anyway, instead it tends to be prevalent at the
more inexpensive or moderate places.

Why do you automatically think this is diverted product? I'm not being
snippy, I'm really curious. AFAICT salons that stock Redken seem to be
really prevalent and run the gamut from dime-a-dozen mall places to
trendy Haight Street salons. I don't think it would be odd at all to
find the liters of it on sale at someplace in the mall - didn't they
change their packaging *again* very recently? perhaps the shop had to
sell off the old-style bottles.

On the subject of product diversion, I think the one that is "worst" for
this is Sebastian, I see their stuff all the time in drugstores. But
OTOH, I recently saw TiGi stuff at one of the local supermarkets, which
was kind of surprising.

so your opinion is that Target, Kroger, Rite Aide, etc. are in the 'soapy
crap in a bottle
which reads Redken or Alterna or whatever brand', game?
interesting theory.......
not sure why they would risk doing that as that would be against the law
where as diversion (as it is referred to) is not against any law.......they
have no problems buying the real thing and selling it......
I might believe a copy/fake being sold at a flea market as the real thing
but not at a major corporate retail outlet........and usually flea market
salon products are bought at auctions where salons have gone out of
business.......they may/could be old product but usually not copies or
fakes......
I do think it is nice to support your stylist.....

I always buy salon brands (Aveda, Redken, etc.) at salons. Paul Mitchell has
stated numerous times that *most* salon products are old or replicas at any
other location like a grocery store. On the backs of the bottles, it will
often say "authenticity and quality guaranteed only if sold in professional
salons" or something along those lines. Personally, I don't know if that's the
case for all shampoos sold at random chains like CVS or Walgreen's, but I keep
it at the salon just to be safe- plus, my stylist gets the commision and she
definitely deserves it.

see your copy of American Salon for this month. it should be
making its way to you soon. there's an accompaniment to it
(which i mentioned elsewhere), in which many of the manufacturers
say they're taking a stand against diversion.

Oh, it didn't really, sorry if I sounded pissed off. I just couldn't
figure out, even after reading it a couple times, what in the OP made
you think "diverted product", that's all. No worries.

in retrospect, i should have started a new thread completely.
but i just thought of it when i was responding, so thought i'd
post about it.

in case i'm not being clear: i'm not accusing the OP of buying
diverted products. salon products purchased in a salon
(regardless of the salon's name), are guaranteed.

I'm not surprised. I've seen almost every line out there. I've seen
TiGi, Sebastians, Rusk, Back to Basics, American Crew, Wella, Paul
Mitchell, Aveda, Graham Webb, L'anza, and even Phytologie on
supermarket and drugstore shelves.

and what's interesting is that if you compare drugstore prices to
the salon price, the salon price is nearly always lower!
