- I've found my perfect curl ritual
- Posted by Carly Marquis
For those of you who have wavy hair, but not, annoying and kinky, but
straight in places, read this and try it if you have the means.
I have battled my curls as we all have. But about a month ago I found the
perfect combination of products and schedule. My curls are bouncy, defined
and shiny. Here it is:
I get in the shower and use baby shampoo only on my roots, then I use a mix
of Pantene Color Complete Therapy conditioner and Suave kids detangler, I
comb out after about 5 minutes and then rinse.
When I get out of the shower I use Frizz-Ease hair serum, then I towel off
and wait about 10 minutes before applying L'oreal Lasting Curls Gel followed
by Herbal Essences Mousse and then followed by Sebastian Shaper Plus. I
air-dry for an hour and then diffuse my hair until it's about 60% dry, then
I use John Frieda Beach Blonde Ocean Waves spray, and diffuse it until
almost dry. Then I pull my hair back loosely and put on a bandanna to
prevent frizz while I sleep.
When I wake up I diffuse on cold for a minute flipped upside down, and voila
perfect curls.

routine (from the book of that name) I just dont use shampoo anymore on my
dyed red curls, don't use anything, gel etc, containing silicones, don't use
a hairdryer, don't use brushes or combs on my hair (just use my fingers to
detangle in the shower while conditioner is on); all simplified now, and my
curls have never been better; I get perfect spiral curls. What ever works
for you, I definitely know how temperamental curls can be.

I wash 3 x a week. Condition daily. use the cider vinegar rinse as needed.
blot when done, fingercomb. put in leave in conditioner, some curl enhancer
(down by the beach, it helps control frizz and help curls last) gel or spray
(back to basics or fekkai!) and a root boost if it's that kind of day.
let dry for while, diffuse then put in clips at roots in front, on top

Wow, Carly - that sounds like a little too much time for me (but I am sure YOUR
curls look 100% better than mine
)
I have taken to the simple expedient of washing out only about half of my
conditioner, then towel drying. Most of the time, it is enough to get my hair
to the "mermaid wave" stage, which I love.
I tried the "curly girls" washing with conditioner routine for only two
days before I couldn't stand it!
If all else fails, and the humidity conspires against me, I simply tell
people haughtily that if out-of-control is good enough for Helena Bonham
Carter, than it's good enough for me....

I really, really screwed up and used silicone products (some old Frizz
Ease serum, some Citre Shine stuff) for three days in a row. What was
I thinking? My hair knotted up from the roots down. I'm treating it
very gently, but it's really taught me a lesson.
I got some Samy (the guy who's always on HSN hawking his hair
products) conditioner at the local Walgreens for $5, and used it in
the shower this morning. First I left it on for five minutes, did the
partial rinse, then scrunched some on before my knot-combout. Ouch.
I think it really helped. For the first time in a week, my curls are
once again shiny, well-defined, soft and not-too-knotty. I used
Finesse mousse, also, just let it air dry.
I love the routine, and the next thing I'm going to try is the 'clips
holding up the crown and top-of-head hair' thing to give more height.

What is "Curly Girl"? Is iit like a book or something and where do I
find it?

I've got to try this too, Anya. Ever since I let my "top knot" grow out, my
hair is kind of flat on top. I hate that. And I know what you mean about your
curls knotted up, too. I almost posted about that very thing this afternoon,
but got interrupted. I actually do have KNOTS in my hair, as if someone tied
them. I've looked very closely at them and have discovered that the curls wind
around each other as they are drying and then, when they are completely dried,
they are so twisted together that they have formed real knots. An example of
this that I thought of is the way the tendrils on a clematis grow. They curl
around each other and form real knots. I know you know exactly what I mean.

Oh, my hair twin, we feel each other's pain! It's also very weird we
get the same weird knotting thing at the same time. I had knots
everywhere, like never before. Big wacking clouds of knots. My arms
got tired combing them out. Try the SAMY conditioner stuff if you can
find it, because it seems to have 'de-siliconed'/ 'unknotted' my hair.

Had to follow up on my post because I forgot an important detail -- no
way I could follow the CG rule to only finger comb with this knot-up.
I had to get out the big-tooth comb, and work from the ends up, about
an inch at a time, to get those knot balls out. It took forever with
the comb, it would have taken forever and a day with just fingers.
Lots of hair broke off, thank G I have tons of hair. It looks
beautiful now, kind of between mermaid and ringlets with a smooth
crown.
I'll *never* use silicone on my hair again!

The SAMY products are sold on Home Shopping Network, occasionally while
channel surfing I see him selling his hair care products. I have been tempted
to get the volumizing kit of products.

I will, Anya. And you say you use Finesse mousse? I was using Citre Shine
gel, but it's drying my hair into straw and, like you said, helping it to knot.
Does the Finesse mousse make your hair hard and crunchy? I hate crunchy hair
and some of the mousses do that. -- Beck

I take it this SAMY conditioner is really, really moisturizing? I have to be
sure of this because my hair *drinks* conditioners and is still on the dry
side. -- Beck

I found that the metal clips they recommend have a tendency to shift (at
least on my hair anyway) or fall out. I now use those cheapo plastic baby
claw clips you can buy (like at walmart). Not the really tiny, tiny ones,
but the ones about 1 1/2 cm wide. Those seem to work better for me.

curly hair with lots of neat info! The technique in the book is to not use
shampoo, you clean your
hair with conditioner only. I must say after being very skeptical, I tried
it, and my hair has never looked better.

You're having problems with the Citre shine too, eh? I think the whole
line stinks, at least for our kind of hair. The Finesse mousse was a
bit firm at first, probably because I applied so much, but gradually
softened nicely so that I can't feel it at all.
The CG book recommends gel, but I never have luck with that - it
always makes my hair stringy and crunchy. The book says that
stringy/crunchy hair is a result of using too much product, so that is
something to consider.

My hair is very, very thick, so I don't think I'll have that problem,
but the clips they show in the book are the kinds my grandmother and
mother used, and I hate them. To me they personify 'old lady' hair, so
I have to find a more modern version :-) I have to go to Salley this
week, so I'll check them out. I had some old claw clips I tried, they
worked OK, but not great. I only had two, I needed at least four, but
their x-crossing teeth weren't the best.

What's the matter, Stevie, the 'metal clip nerd look' doesn't work for

would be out of the question, no?
