Does shampooing less frequently reduce the amount of oil produced by your scalp?
Posted by Curly

For me the answer is a big "yes".

Here is what happened:

A while ago, I used to wash, condition, and blow dry every morning. My thin
hair became very damaged and broken from all the blow drying. My hairdresser
suggested I quit washing and blow drying every day. I felt I "had to" do it
every day because by the next morning, my scalp was very oily. But for some
reason I decided to try it anyway. I started out by switching to every other
day. At first it made my skin crawl on the second day, but I started to get
used to it. I started to think that the conditioner was contributing to the
oily scalp situation. So I quit using the conditioner, and slowly increased
the interval between shampoos.

Today, I wash my hair twice and sometimes only once per week. I am using
conditioner again, but not always.

I have to say that my hair looks (and is) 1000 times healthier. It takes
almost a week for my scalp to feel as oily as it used to feel on the second
day.

I am curious if anyone has had a similar experience, or if there are any
hairdressers out there who know about this.

Yes, I have found that if I shampoo every day, my scalp becomes oily much more
quickly, like a rebound effect.

However, I cannot go without washing it every other day. Otherwise I fear
becoming a biohazard to those around me. Plus, I just feel grimy!

I too used to wash my hair everyday but now I do it every other day. I
can't go any longer then that as I have pretty oily skin and by the third
day it feels really greasy.
I only put conditioner on the bottom of my hair and not up by my scalp.

Why would conditioner make anyone's scalp greasy? Conditioner is only meant
to go on the ends.

I wash my hair everyday. I feel dirty and itchy if I miss a day. I *did*
try what a friend does - washing, conditioning, and blow drying in the
evening - with no styling products - and in the morning my hair did look
nice and smooth. But I felt dirty and itchy. I just can't skip a day.

The few times I did luck out and found a shampoo
that would cooperate with my oily scalp and
dry hair at the ends, it never lasted more than
a few days. The perfect alignment of all the
variables that made those few days unique, soon
shift around and once more I'm the same grudging
hair warrior I usually have to be. <sigh>

You might want to try just rinsing your hair some days instead of shampooing.
Rinsing alone will eliminate the grimy feeling,

The process of trying to use less shampoo is gross but well worth the
effort. Your scalp will produce much less sebum, oil and dandruff in the
long run once you try to cut down on harsh cleansing. In the adjustment
period though, your hair will feel pretty nasty.

I suggest doing it during a long weekend of solitude LOL.

I am in agreement with you here-I wash my hair 2x/week and it looks
and feels fantastic. It also helps that I don't blowdry it or use any
heat appliances on it nor do I use any styling products. I am just
really lucky that I have the kind of hair that requires no maintenance
aside from cleansing/conditioning. My evil SIL is a hairdresser and
is always making snide comments about how I never do anything to my
hair. hee hee

My mother swears by this 'theory' too. When they were growing up her sister
(who had hair just like hers) insisted on washing it every day. My Mom washed
(and washes) hers 1-2x a week. Years later, her sister just can't cut back
without getting the major greasies. To make it more interesting, my mother
still has a lot more of her hair. Her sister's is getting really thin. I've
been wondering lately if it was somehow 'washed off' over the years. Myself,
every 2-3 days is about right. Depends on what I've been doing.

i wash and condition every day, but don't blow dry it. there are some shampoos
which say "gentle" or something else which indicates it's not that harsh and
can be used everyday so i try to use those many times along with others. i
switch the type of shampoo and conditioner i use a lot. i just feel "not clean"
if i don't wash my hair.

Fine, on the normal to dry'ish side, straight and somewhat thinning hair
here...

I generally wash my hair every two, but mostly three days, and sometimes let it
go a 4th day, if I am planning on wearing a cap or being outdoors. What I use
is the nioxin treatment on my scalp in the morning. Not a lot, but then I take
my dryer and just blow the hair around to make sure my scalp is dry. Throw
some velcro rollers in, run the curling iron over the rest and that's it.

My hair is shiny, and my hairdresser always comments on how healthy it is.

This probably is a YMMV kind of thing.

My hair feels gross when I don't wash it everyday...but I am going to try what
y'all suggested and wash it every third day. Maybe it will get "used" to not
being washed every single day cuz I have a big problem with oil on my scalp and
very dry ends. I'll see what happens.

I went to a hairstylist in London and he recommended to my friend and I that
we don't wash our hair everyday. He said it was amazing how many Americans
shampooed and styled their hair daily. After going to him, I don't shampoo
everyday, but I do rinse my hair. I find that for my fine, thin hair, it
works. My hair is easier to style as well.

I have tried that in the summer when I'm not working. . .doesn't work.
I still have very oily hair. I usually dont condition it (though I
have lately as my highlights have dried out my hair)

The only time when I could get away with not washing my hair every day
was when I had a really bad perm a few years ago.

Could the reason some people have changed their practice is age? My
mom who has the same hair type as I do can wash her hair every other
day, but she's also menopausal. When she was my age, she had to wash
her hair every day. There was a gradual change in her 40's where she
could go about a day and a half to now that she's in her 50's can do
it every other day.

My hair has gotten more oily as I have gotten older - more specifically during
the past couple of years. So has my face - it is like reliving the teen years
all over again.

My hair is long, so I only wash it every other day, but by the end of the
second day my scalp is a greaseball. (Dirty secret: once in a while I even
use Prell to really get it good and clean.)

I wash my hair every day because it's thick and straight and looks
like a haystack the 2nd day if I do not...LOL, but I've been told by
my stylist and my colorist (two difft. people at two very different
salons with a different approach/concept regarding beauty) that if you
use a Boar Bristle hairbrush before bed it's such a good natural
cleanser and it's so good at distributing the natural oils in your
hair in a proper manner from the roots to the ends, that you don't
need to wash every day.

my theory about this is that the scalp reacts to what ever is used on
it....if you are shampooing every day with a very gentle shampoo or diluting
your regular shampoo in half with distilled water then you may find that the
oil secretions will slow down.....reducing the harshness of the shampoo is
more important in my opinion and experience.....this can take 6 or more
weeks to notice........if you are skipping a day or two and then have to use
a very harsh shampoo to clean the hair or shampoo twice, then the scalp is
going to silently scream and send more oil to the now very dry scalp.......
my vote goes to diluting or changing shampoos (to something even more
gentle) before cutting back on frequency........
in the salon situation we have suggested this to clients over 20 some years
and found an amazingly good result.......the scalp slows or lessens it's
production of oils in almost all cases......once this is done you can then
look at cutting back a day or two but again it will take time to
notice........

My mom is 60. She washes her hair every 2 or 3 days. On the days she
doesn't wash her hair she rubs baby powder on her scalp to dry up the oil.
Works for her. Sounds itchy to me.

Can't comment on that. I have been doing this every 3-4 day wash thing since
I was in my 20's and am now hip deep in my 40's. My hair has thinned over the
years, but basically has stayed staight, fine, and normal/dry.

FWIW, my bf has had moderate dandruff on his normal-to-oily scalp -- or
perhaps "combination" since it's dry under the thinning parts! He tried many
dandruff-specific shampoos including Nizoral both OTC and Rx, but the thing
that's actually working now is Physique Amplifying/Volumizing Shampoo, which
seems to me like a very clarifying shampoo; while OTOH gentle SLS-free
shampoos have had disastrous results -- flake city, yuck.

He usually washes every day but I may try diluting this HG shampoo to see if
it improves his scalp condition. Man, he would *love* if he could get away
with washing/showering less! LOL
