You won't believe it......swords.
At one time, all clothes wrapped/buttoned the same way, with right over left
(women's style). But for a right-handed man, this leaves a gap that could foul
your sword hilt when drawing. Remember, you're drawing left-to-right. So the
sides were switched on men's clothing to make the left side overlap the right.

I do know that all Japanese kimono, both men's and women's,
are left over right. Right over left is reserved for the
dead.
