- Permanent makeup
- Posted by C.S. Nunemaker
I had permanent eyebrow, eyeliner and lip color done today. Although I felt
a bit like Goldie Hawn in "First Wives' Club" after the numbing agent went
on my lips, I think that the result is going to be great. Just thank
goodness for the bags of frozen peas for the swelling.
Oh, it might mean a bit less makeup being purchased, but there is PLENTY in
the world yet for me to try!!!

You had everything done at one???
Wow, you are brave.
I had my lips lined a few years back and it was PAINFUL (despite the
anesthetic cream) I did enjoy having "Angeline Jolie-like" lips for a
few days though.
I got some kind of cream which I had to apply to my healing lips for
like 2 weeks? to prevent a scab from forming.

Wow, you're gutsy, how painful is it?

Permanent lipliner? Do you mean filled-in lips, or just the line around them?

Yes, I did have everything done at once. It almost seemed that once the
pain was first experienced with the eyebrows, it was a bit easier as the
time went on. I did get a tattoo earlier this year while in Las Vegas (at
age 50 no less) so the type of pain was known. Perhaps, too, my tolerance
for pain is a bit more developed as I have spent some extended periods of
time in the hospital and with medical tests. Having everything done at once
only presented me with one "event" of anticipation.
I do have to be honest and say that the eyeliner was the worst, particularly
on my left side. We had to stop a few times and add a bit more numbing
agent, but there were a few tender spots. My lips actually didn't hurt that
much except right in the center. I had both a lip lining and a blending out
of lip color actually on to the lips. There was some dark bruising
yesterday on my lips, but today it is gone. I just drank a lot of ice
water and ice tea and kept cold against the lips.
Today my eyelids are a rather red, but I did put on cold tea bags and some
ice compresses, as well as following the directions to apply a
sealant/vasoline type substance 5x per day over all of the areas. One uses
the sealant to try to keep scabbing to a minimum. Thank goodness that I do
work from home, so I did not have to face too many folks today. One other
thing is that I need to stay away from applying makeup to my eye and lip
area for about 5 days. I just put on a bit of foundation, powder and blush
and felt quite "dressed" today.
The technician who did my work has included in her price, two "touch ups" in
the next year, to fine tune any color or enhancement of the work that she
did. I'll be seeing her at the end of February to re-evaluate what she did
and in light of the fact that I am letting my grey hair come in.

My sister in law bought the machine and did it to herself. She has
eyeliner and lips done and both look natural, i would have never
thought it was a tatoo.

had actual color put in her lips:

I didn't know you could do that.
Besides the pain part of the procedure, I was happy with the results.
After like 3 years it just vanished....no change in color (this is
what I was afraid of mostly that the color will turn and become blue
or something..)
The last time I had a very natural color put in soo natural that you
could hardly see it (it did outline my lips nicely but it was so
subtle that I almost felt that maybe more color would have been
perhaps better.)
I want to have it done again this year and this time I think I am
going to go with a more pinkish tone.
I would love to know how you are progressing Chris and if you are
happy with the color blending you have in your lips.
I have heard the eyebrows is the least painful of all the face areas.
But the funny thing is a friend had the eyeliner done and she assure
me it almost didn't hurt. I don't use eyeliner everyday and when I do
I change colors so I am not sure I could commit to one color for
it....since my friend had me believing it was practically a no-pain
experience....I was sort of considering it. No more.
I am definitely doing the lip lining though. Now to look for the
right place.
When I had it done the first time I did it overseas so now I am stuck
at finding a good place to have it done here.

You can always add color over the tattoo darkness in that case.

How did the eyebrow turn out. I've never understood how eyebrow tatooing can
work - eyeliner and lipliner I can definitely understand, but eyebrow tatooing
mystifies me.

Oh my God! I would be scare of hurting myself (especially in the eye area)
or doing it badly because of the pain.
I never knew there was a do-it-yourself machine to do these sort of things.

Yikes! I fear that I am not that brave. I had the eyeliner done because
my eyesight t'aint what it used to be and I am forever having a slip-up when
trying to put on eyeliner.

I recently saw an ageing Swiss woman who had tattooed eyebrows (one of
those women who desperately cling to their modelling past even when
they're well into their fifties). She is blonde, so the eyebrows were
done in ashy little lines, to resemble hairs. Neatly done, but you'd
need to have pretty poor eyesight not to notice that they're drawn on.

Your fifties aren't that old -- and should she have let herself become a total
slob instead?

True enough, but I think this is a real downfall (or advantage, if you don't
like it) --permanent makeup is NOT permanent. After a couple of years, in all
but the most unusual cases, the color fades/disappears and you have to have it
done again.

I think the idea of the permanent makeup is to look like you might look if it
were natural. For instance, a little permanent eyeliner in the lash line to
make the lashes look fuller and the eye more defined, not 60s swoops that go
beyond the eye. Although I'd never do permanent makeup, I don't think it would
'date' anyone unless done in a non-natural, faddish way. Someone at work had
permanent eyeliner and lipstick done about a year ago, and it's already fading.
