Umm Let's see.
I think it was around April of last year??
My husband enjoyed the Chart House very much, we dined there twice! The Chart
House in Scottsdale has not received good reviews so we skip dining there.
Hope this restaurant still has enjoyable fish entrees after I suggested it to
Stevie! LOL

The Chart House is one of many restuarants (concepts) owned by the Landry's

I missed the original question, but since I live here in Monterey /Pacific
Grove, could I help answer something?

Okay, I don't want to challenge or dispute anyone's good experiences in
restaurants, at all.
But if I were in the Monterey/Carmel area, I'd want to eat in a non-chain
restaurant. And one away from a tourist hot spot (i.e., Cannery Row). So, do
you have any recs for this?

Sooz, we also dined at The Old Bath House (one of a kind restaurant )in
Pacific Grove and were disappointed with our entrees. Next night (or so) we
went back to The Chart House and were happy once again.
However, The Sardine Factory in Monterey had wonderful fish, not sure if it
still gets great reviews ?? Perhaps someone knows??

Ohh Thank you Sooz! We are leaving for a trip to SantaFe though on Sunday, so
no hurry for you to get to P.O. in next few days!
I am curious now though!

I know it's a chain (but we don't have it here and I like it) but Il
Fornaio is good. There's a fun breakfast place called Katy's (or
Katie's). Montrio is good Italian. I like Robata (Japanese) in the
Barnyard shopping center.
If you drive down to Big Sur, it's SO worth having lunch or dinner at
the Ventana Inn or the Post Ranch Inn. They're stunning!

The Sardine Factory is near the wharf area but definitely not a chain
restaurant.
You can find info about it on line.

I think The Sardine Factory is the only thing that is still there from when
we lived in Monterey! It is so different. We used to hang out at Flora's
and The Warehouse. What fun days those were.

We stay in Pacific Grove, and really enjoy going to the Scottish Bakery
on Lighthouse Avenue.
The Big Dipper Ice Cream parlor also on Lighthouse, and we like to eat
at the Tinnery at Lover's Point in Pacific Grove. Enjoy your stay, to
me, there is no place like it.

Another great restaurant in Pacific Grove is the Taste Cafe.

Yup, I would go to Bahama Billy's in the Barnyard or, as we
call it, Pajama Billy's. Food is great and the ambiance is
not pretentious. We went there for an early dinner on New
Year's Eve and I had a marvelous pork roast.
Another option is Tarpy's on Rt 68. They have meatloaf to die
for, which is something you normally do not find in an upscale
restaurant.

I remember my first time there. We went into Flora's which was done up
like an old bordello. A friend of DH was the singer there. Then through
the door into the Warehouse. From a quiet, sultry atmosphere into a little
room with pin ball machines clanging away then into the wild Warehouse.
Loved that old Cannery Row.
Do the monarch butterflies still at Pacific Grove still gather at Pacific

Stevie, Sorry for the long response
We go to the Monterey/Pacific Grove/Carmel/Big Sur area quite frequently and
we have distinct preferences.
We prefer Pacific Grove to Monterey's Cannery Row because CR is full of
tourist kitsch. You may find one or two non-chain restaurants, otherwise
you've got yourself a bunch of chain/themed restaurants, t-shirt and
chocolate shops, Thomas Kinkade gallery, etc. The outlets right around the
corner aren't even good, IMHO. The aquarium is a fun time and the Steinbeck
and historical finds are hidden amongst the tourist crappe if you are so
inclined.
PG starts right where the north end of Monterey ends, a block or so north of
the Aquarium. You can rent bikes and ride north along the multi-use path to
PG where things are quieter and more natural. You can probably even spot
otters in the kelp south and north of Lover's Point in PG. They are so cute
playing there in the ocean and cracking open food on their tummies as they
lie on their backs that you want to buy one and take one home! PG is quaint
in a laid back way and charming, in a way that Monterey can't be. It's full
of teensy old houses that used to be homes for the Methodists who settled
there (is was a retreat area). It's full of cats and we often see deer on
the islands in the street and out on the golf course.
The Bath House in PG near Lover's Point looks alluring but it is overpriced
and not good. The Tinnery is another place that serves OK food but depends
upon the location/view for for traffic. It usually smells of fried food. We
prefer the "in town" restaurants in PG which are only a few blocks up from
the bay, and PASSIONFISH is one good one I would definitely recommend. We
were just there a month ago and it was lovely. Inventive seafood. BYO good
wine glass if you like; wine is retail priced not restaurant (over)priced.
See chowhound.com for more comments. It is a five-minute drive from the
aquarium. Fandango is also a beloved restaurant in PG. It's got more
traditional fare and IMO is probably a tad beyond its prime. But I would
still eat there. Fishwife, out by Asilomar, is nothing to rave about but it
draws crowds. There are other good places in PG such as Petra's (Greek) and
Taste (further up on Forest and I've not been there but heard decent things
about it).
When we want lunch or a quick bite near the Aquarium we go to Vivolo's
Chowder House, on Lighthouse about 3 blocks up from the Aquaurium. It's a
straightforward casual fish place, and they have tummy-warming Boston-style
clam chowder with fresh clams. It's dependably good. We especially like the
garlic and cheese encrusted top of the breadbowl.
If you are heading south toward Big Sur I would strongly recommend the Post
Ranch Inn for dinner or lunch (much less expensive and you can enjoy the
amazing view during daylight). We were just there. It's across the road from
the Ventana Inn, which also has a good restaurant, although the PRI
surpasses it IMO. The PRI is the epitome of elegant simplicity. It is built
on a cliff overlooking the ocean. Nothing is between it and the ocean. Some
of the tables have a sliding glass door that leads to a small private deck
with structural glass railing. Best to call for reservations even for lunch
because parking is limited. The PRI resort has less than 20 unique
treehouses and earth bermed rooms. It's architecturally lovely and so is the
restaurant. It's easy to miss because the sign faces south not north, but
it's the driveway exactly across from the one into the Ventana Inn.
Nepenthe is very popular. Food is OK, nothing special, and you indeed pay a
premium for eating on their lovely locale, even in the less expensive Kiva
deck. Their store is very earthy and the view out the back of it to the
little solo tree is charming. It's the kind of place you drive by, see that
it's full of people, and desire to go there even if you have to wait a long
time, especially on a sunny day.
Since you are not shopping, I gather you aren't going to Carmel but if you
are there are lots of good restaurants there. The Forge in the Forest is one
I would recommend for a variety of palates.
If you are going to the Pebble Beach area, there are a few great places to
dine there, too!
If you get my drift, there are GREAT eats near Monterey and one can miss a
lot of it by not venturing beyond Cannery Row or their wharf area.
Have a great trip!
Claire
