- Help! New hair color, so new hair care products?
- Posted by Morgan
Hello A.F.ers.
I've recently moved 431 miles away from my hair technician. I've arranged
for a (much needed) cut & color with a new salon group. However, when I made
my appointment, the receptionist told me that "If you don't buy our Bumble &
Bumble or Kerastase products, we will not guarantee the color." Is this
standard?
I'm aware of these products' reputation, and I'd love to give them a go,
but they're a bit out of my price range. In your estimable opinion, was the
receptionist just giving me an earful, or do B & B / Kerastase products
really retain hair color?
Help! Please,
TIA,
Morgs

variables involved. A lot of salons have high pressure sales tactics, but
I've never heard of anyone giving a "guarantee" on color with use of a
specific product. Take it with a grain of salt, and remember that she is a
receptionist not a stylist.

<nomot1521@earthlink.net> coughed and sputtered, and managed to
choke out these words:
our client cards state the same. that our work isn't guaranteed
unless the client purchases the products that we recommend.

Indeed. It was a very liquid evening.
Understood-- but, honestly, do these products really help retain hair color,
or is it a marketing device?
Cheers,

i vote marketing device. and a great way to add wiggle room for salons to
not "guarantee" their work. the product i have tried, along these lines,
were about as effective as anything else...ie: no different at all. save
your money.

The salon I use carries both of these lines, plus Phyto stuff and others.
My stylist has recommended products from all the lines they carry based on
my hair texture, hair cut, etc. Never has she mentioned any correlation
between the color result/longevity and these products.
I believe I would find another salon.

It's a cheezy way of trying to boost sales. And if they actually used the word
'buy' instead of 'use', then it makes it even more obvious that they're trying
to make the extra money on retail sales. Seriously tacky stuff and I don't
think I'd return to a salon that tried to pull that stunt.

Actually, there are shampoos that won't strip color as easily as others. One
for example is Pureology. This shampoo does not have sulfates, which is a
stripping agent. Most shampoos do have sulfates.
At our salon we don't 'require' anyone to use a particular shampoo, but of
course recommendations are made. My customers who use Pureology have all
been thrilled with the product. Pureology actually has a money back
guarantee. My perspective as a professional is, you just spent $xx amount of
dollars on your color, why would you scrimp on the maintenance? To me, it's
being penny wise and pound foolish.
But, I do agree that it is absurd that a salon would insist on using their
product only.

The last salon I went to sold B&B and Kerastase. The salon I go to
now sells B&B. Neither of these salons had any "guarantee" policy. I
can assure you that if they did, I would have taken my business
elsewhere.
That being said, I do like B&B products and have used them for years.
Now that I read about this "guarantee" nonsense, I feel even better
about using B&B products since I was not coerced into it -- I chose
them because they were good products.
You can save money on B&B products by buying the quart sized
containers. They seem to last forever.
Kerastase is, IMNSHO, way, way, way, way too overpriced L'Oreal. Who,
by the way, owns Kerastase.
