The Von Dutch company, based in Southern California, was initially
known for its customized motorcycles, and (I think) only started doing
clothes as a sideline. I think that part of the appeal, at least
initially, was that connection to a kind of cool biker subculture.

My husband started wearing Von Dutch t-shirts several years ago, when
the brand was obscure and hard to find, and has now mostly given them
up in disgust. Once teenage suburban girls start wearing something,
you know it's lost any tough-guy cachet it ever had.

Looks like that was the case for those "trucker" hats.
BTW, how is a trucker hat different from a basecall cap?

LOL!
This is helpful because I couldn't figure out what the bowling bags and
t-shirts had to do with the motorcycle in the window.

from the article linked to above... "In a New York Times article in
May, a cap-sporting musician explained that the hats, once cool, were
now so uncool as to be cool once again."

i HATE people who think like that... pretentious f*cks!

p.s. justin timberlake and britney spears are NOT cool, at least IMO,
especially britney, she has horrible taste in fashion and style...

Funny but this came up in conversation over the weekend and I proposed that
they are taller and squarer whereas baseball caps have rounder tops and seem
more fitted to the head. Just my guess.

Also, I was wondering what the Von Dutch things was about especially after
seeing Paris and Nicole wearing them in one ep on TSL. Now I know!

Yep. A "trucker hat" has a square construction, whereas a baseball
cap has a circular construction; a "trucker hat" is four-pieced, and a
baseball cap is six-pieced. And, yes, a "trucker hat" has a higher
crown than a baseball cap.

"Trucker hats", also called "meshbacks" (because the back is
frequently made of poly mesh) originally were loyalty items for truck
and heavy equipment companies like Caterpillar, Peterbilt, John Deere,
and the like.

Of course, one can buy a "trucker hat" with a baseball team's logo on
it now, and a John Deere baseball cap, so I can see how it could be
confusing

My guess is that Von Dutch hired a high-powered PR or marketing firm
and said "Make us as big as Harley-Davidson" and the firm blanketed
celebs (and pseudo-celebs) with freebies, sparking a quick trend and a
quick backlash.

I'm sticking to my Red Sox cap.

Interesting article about the original Von Dutch, a contemporary of Big
Daddy Roth, and how his name became a label.
