Update on Dad.

Just spoke to my sister in law. She said they will be releasing him from
the hospital tomorrow. That's the good news. The bad news is that he still
has the drain in him to drain off excess bile. He is taking some sort of
enzyme for his pancreas. And he will be using insulin. So for the time
being, he is one of us. She did not know if these things would be permanent
or not. Alas, the Drs. still have not found the cause of these problems.
Might be related to pills he was taking, might not. My brother and I think
it might have to do with the Shperocytosis he has, but his Drs. aren't
looking at that. For the time being he is on a very restricted diet of
vegetables and carbs. So no turkey for him! Not sure about the whys and
wherefores of the diet. He will be having a nurse check in on him daily.

Good that he is getting out, too bad they couldn't find the cause.

My daughter's boyfriend has to take an enzyme all the
time, he got stabbed in the pancreas so needs to take
it for the rest of his life plus insulin. Your dad will
most likely be able to go onto a full diet eventually.
Glad he is on the mend.

It is excellent news that he is out of the hospital - which
I'm sure he would agree with - and doing well! Not so good
that they haven't located the cause of his problems, but
as long as the treatment seems to be working, that's the
most important thing.

Congratulations, and hopes for continued good luck!

He is home now. Taking Glucophage, Atigall (sp?), Catipress Patch (sp? For
BP), and something called Panreace or Pancreass (sp?). My Dad thought this
last thing was some kind of oral insulin. I think he is confused. AFAIK
there is no such thing. My brother thought this was an enzyme to help him
digest his food. He must take it with each meal.

The visiting nurse brought him a meter today and so far his highest BG has
been 127. My brother was anxious to see what it would be after dinner since
they have him on a diet of almost all carbs. He said in the hospital they
were giving him regular soda and three large scoops of mashed potatoes or
rice and nothing else. He flat out refused to drink the regular soda and it
was very difficult for him to get any that was diet.

The Dr. now says there ARE gallstones and he also thinks there might be a
mass in there that needs to be operated on. But he will have to wait for
another CT scan to see about that. And they don't know if he will have
permanent diabetes or not. From what I've read, it only goes into diabetes
if a certain part of the pancreas is affected. But given the family
history, it could be likely. Mainly, my Dad is still very weak and tired,
but glad to be home.

Thanks for your kind thoughts!

First of all, I am glad to hear that your Dad is home and, hopefully, on
he road to recovery. Reading this above paragraph makes me feel thankful
tht there are machines like CT scanners to find what is inside. In the
old days it was exploratory sugery!

I hope you have had a wonderful Thanksgiving
