question about shots and timing
Posted by K30a

I keep a regular schedule during the week
and know when all my shots should be.
I usually take three units of humalog before
every meal.
Today I slept in and had breakfast at 9:30,
lunch at 3:30. I'd like
to have dinner now 6:40.
Now I've been told humalog leaves the body
within three hours so I should be okay to have
another shot and dinner now.
But my usual time between lunch and dinner is
about 5 and a half hours.
This timing has me a bit confused as this is the first
time I'm so off schedule.
(I usually never sleep in much!)

No one here should be advising you when or how much to take. You should
call your doctor if you are unsure. PLEASE HEED THIS WARNING AND DO NOT
LISTEN TO ANYONE GIVING YOU DOSAGE/TIMING ADVICE. There is way too much
misinformation. Anyone giving you instructions would be giving medical
advice without a medical license. I doubt that the doctors that use
this NG would want to dispense medications advice over the net. But the
other folks here have a hard time containing themselves.

The fragmentary cites I have seen on the Web suggest that:

about 75% to 87% of the Humalog is "gone" at 3 hours
about 90% to 95% of the Humalog is "gone" at 4 hours.

However, you are taking a very tiny dose. I shoot 8 units before
Breakfast and Dinner and I'm not particularly shooting a lot.

It looks to me that you are a Type 2 who is "tweaking" a bit to augment your
self-generated insulin capacity. As such, I would expect no problems
with shooting more Humalog then eating again only 3 hours after your last
shot-meal.

Two rules of thumb you might want to think about.

A non-Insulin Resistant diabetic would expect to shoot about 1 unit for each
15 gram of carb in the meal.

A non-Insulin Resistant diabetic would expect to shoot about 0.25 units of
Humalog per kg body weight per day.

I don't think you are shooting anywhere near those expected values. If
you are Insulin Resistant (as I think), then you could easily double the
insulin doses suggested by those limits.

Thanks Old Al,

Yes, I'm type two.
Doctor says we'll probably try going off
daytime insulin this week.
This morning I got up much earlier and think in the future I'll adjust meal
times and eat even when I'm really not all that hungry to get back on track
during the day. Not that I ever get much of a chance to sleep in!

I wouldn't have any problems doing this under these conditions.
