Hi Al, I'm glad to report that things have improved and I seem to be
getting over it. I got through yesterday evening by sipping orange
juice and was testing at a reprehensible 8.5, higher than I would
normally tolerate but I did feel better there than at 3.8 :-(
During the night, though, I had the most godawful splitting headache, I
actually had to take painkillers for it. Don't know if that's a
diabetic thing or connected to the bug or what.
Today I don't feel anywhere near as shaky which is v. good.

I don`t think 8.5 for one evening when you`ve got an infection is any kind
of problem.
Sounds like a part of the bug to me. Over the last 3-4 years there have been
several causing the headache/upset tummy illness.
I am very pleased to hear you are feeling better.

Mogget,
It sounds to me like your problem is that you are taking too much glucose. I
have gone through similar problems with low blood sugar. When I'd eat
something to push the blood sugar back up, I'd end up experiencing another
swing down. Unpleasant!
I found the solution in Dr. Bernstein's book. He explains that 2 gms of
glucose is all it
takes to raise blood sugar .5 mmol/l. in someone who weighs 150 lbs (approx
10 stone). For someone twice that size, only 4 gms are required. Two grams
is much less glucose than what you find in glucose tabs they sell in
pharmacies. He suggests that you use small candies containing "dextrose"
which turns out to be another name for glucose.
When I start plummeting now, I now take one "Sweetart" candy disc or 5
"Smarties" candies. (I'm not sure if the US "Smarties" are the same as the
ones on sale in the UK.) That very small dose t kicks me back up to the 80s
within fifteen minutes but does not cause me to have another reactive swing
down.
Hope this helps!
