Stacy,
From what I am reading here you appear to have your intentions in the
right place, your trouble seems to be in finding the information you
need to get you rolling in the right direction.
I must have missed when you were diagnosed, and I sure missed the part
about having six children. Wow. That's awsome. I was worn out by
two.
First off, congratulations on quitting smoking. I did five years ago
and while it hasn't been the easiest thing to do, it is so important
that you hang in there. Maybe now you're more "hooked" on the comfort
of chewing the gum. If that's the case, try a sugar free or maybe
even some of those gums that are recommended for after meals like they
have in the tooth brush aisle.
I don't know what the status of your thyroid is, but, when mine went
hyper I seriously thought I was going through and early menopause. It
was awful waking up in the middle of the night to change my night gown
and lay a towel out because there was no way to convince my hubby to
let me change the sheets at three am.
There is so much good information out there. Take a trip to your
local book seller or to your neighborhood library. Gretchen Becker
has a book out called "The First Year - Type Two Diabetes" she has
another one out but I forget the name of it. You might also give
Diana Schwarzbein's book a look for good information on how
carbs/fats/proteins work together -- not necessarily for her dietary
advice unless what she writes appeals to you. Jack Challem has good
information in "Syndrome X".
Be kind to yourself. It's so easy to run in head first and come out
overwhelmed, baffled and frustrated. And that's a good recipe for
throwing your hands up in despair. You didn't become diabetic
overnight and you're not going to gain control of it over night.
You've made a fine step by coming to this group. There is a wealth of
knowledge in this group. None of us is qualified to give medical
advise. But there is a good cheering section. And sometimes a
scolding section. Just remember "scoldings" are done with your best
interest in mind. Take the advise offered here with a grain of salt,
and verify anything that might be stated as "fact" before you go along
with it. Your best first step is to educate yourself.
The conversation about what foods you should and shouldn't consume
made me think about when my kids were babies and I had to introduce
foods slowly, one at a time, not because of BG problems but to
determine if there was going to be an allergic reaction. Perhaps
that's not such an off the wall idea. Determine what foods you do and
don't like. That's the first step. Then you decide how they can best
be combined for nutritional value and BG affect. You are not looking
for the quick fix. You are looking for a way to create a diet that
you and BG can live with. Baby steps add up to big steps in due
course.
Hang in there, you're on the right track.

Another one for the file. It's one of those posts where I keep thinking
"I wish I'd said that!"
Laura, have you considered putting together a more generalised version
of this to put in the a.s.d site together with Jennifer's advice? I can
only speak for myself, but I'd certainly support it.
A sort of "okay, you've been here a week, what next?" advice.
Cheers, Alan, T2, Oz.

I was diagnosed years ago, but I was told it was merely diet control and
that it wasnt a big deal at the time. I was gestational a few times, but
after the last kid and my BG was still high, I was worried.... the dr
apparently wasnt. I guess I mis used his lack of alarm as a reason to
continue eating like I was. Hopefully I will not do that again.

I have lots of gum in my purse... I think its all sugarfree stuff... rarely
chew that.. but then I still have nic gum on me.

From everything I have been told my thyroid is fine. I was givin hormones
in Sept of last year then I had a hysterectomy in November.. so my ovaries
are still recovering from the shock or so Ive been told. The hot flashes
are MUCH better than they were... and I havent had the night sweats since
just after my surgery.

I really do need some extra inspiration by checking out some of these types
of books. I looked for one yesterday but I was at WalMart.. LOL.. dont
think they much care about self help there

I did that today with all those veggies. I ate a giant bowl of broccoli and
Califlower... My BG went down from there and has been going down all day!
My last 2 checks were 113 and 123... I guess its time to eat a little snack
as the BG is going back UP now...

Thanks
I will try to do my very best

I like the exchange chart my dietitian gave me better.
I don't eat like these charts say - I make smaller meals more often.
I don't have 2 servings of fruit at one time - I save one for between meals.
